Few jackets have crossed from military issue to everyday wardrobe as completely as the M-65 field coat. It has a stand up collar, four big pockets, a sturdy zipper and a loose, boxy fit that layers over almost anything. If you want the real thing, the Alpha Industries M-65 is about as close as it gets, because Alpha made the coat for the American Army for a quarter of a century.

## Who makes it

[Alpha Industries](https://www.alphaindustries.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) began as a military contractor in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1959 it won its first Department of Defense contracts, making Air Force N-3B parkas and Navy shipboard shirts. In 1963 it was awarded contracts for the MA-1 flight jacket and the N-2B parka, two designs that became icons.

Then, in 1965, Alpha received its first contracts for the Army's newly developed M-65 field coat. According to the company, that was the beginning of 25 years of government contracts to produce the jacket. In 1970 Alpha started making jackets for the commercial market to keep its production lines busy between government orders, and introduced its 3 Bar logo to set those pieces apart.

## What it is

The M-65 Field Jacket (Heritage) is Alpha's take on the original. The company says it is manufactured to military specifications and keeps the functional details that defined the design, including the intentionally oversized silhouette. That roomy cut allowed soldiers to layer over their uniforms and carry gear without restricting movement.

Here are the details Alpha lists:

- Fit: original 1965 military fit, oversized by design, thigh length
- Shell: 50 percent nylon, 50 percent cotton
- Lining: 65 percent cotton, 35 percent polyester
- Water resistant and wind resistant
- Concealed hood hidden in the collar
- Drawstrings at the hood, waist and hem
- Signature wire field coat zipper
- Buttoned epaulettes on the shoulders
- Four exterior body pockets, one interior welt pocket and one interior zip pocket
- Bi-swing back for freedom of movement
- Cuff tabs
- Works with a button in liner for extra warmth, sold separately

## Why it is cool

The M-65 is pure function. Every detail has a job. The hood tucks into the collar until you need it. The bi-swing back gives your shoulders room to reach and move. The four large pockets were designed to carry gear, and they are just as useful for a phone, a notebook and a pair of gloves.

That practicality is exactly why it became a style classic. The jacket looks good on almost everyone, it goes with jeans, chinos and work pants, and it only gets better as the fabric softens and fades with wear. Owning the version from the company that made it for the Army adds a layer of authenticity that a fashion copy cannot match.

## How to wear it

Alpha describes this as a unisex jacket that fits true to size for a men's core fit, with women recommended to choose two sizes down. Remember that it is oversized on purpose. If you plan to wear it over a hoodie or heavy sweater, stay with your usual size. If you want a closer fit, look at Alpha's more relaxed or modern cuts.

For an easy outfit, pair the olive version with a white tee, straight leg jeans and boots or simple sneakers. In colder months, add the button in liner and a knit cap. Pull the waist drawstring in slightly to give the jacket some shape.

## Care

Alpha recommends machine washing warm on a gentle cycle and tumble drying low, removing it promptly. Use a cool iron if needed. Do not bleach and do not dry clean. Over time the cotton blend will soften and develop its own character, so there is no need to wash it after every wear.

## Who it is for

The Alpha M-65 is for anyone who wants one jacket that handles spring, fall and mild winter days with ease. It suits people who love military history, those who prefer practical clothing and anyone building a simple, durable wardrobe. If you like the idea of a coat with real heritage behind it, this is the one.
