Buying for a designer is harder than it looks. They have strong opinions, they notice details, and they already own plenty of things that are merely nice to look at. The gifts that land are the ones that make the daily work better: a tool they touch hundreds of times a day, a light that makes late nights easier on the eyes, a pencil that feels right in the hand.

This guide focuses on working tools for graphic designers, illustrators, product designers and anyone who spends the day at a desk making things. If you are shopping for someone who loves design objects for the home rather than tools for the studio, our guide to [gifts for design lovers](https://www.unknowndivide.com/gifts-for-design-lovers/) covers coffee makers, clocks and other classics.

## How to choose a gift for a designer

**Think about the daily workflow.** A designer who works mostly on screen will get more from a better input device or desk light than from another notebook. One who sketches every idea first will value paper and pencils.

**Choose quality over quantity.** Designers tend to keep one good tool for years rather than a drawer of cheap ones. A single excellent object beats a bundle of filler.

**Check compatibility.** For anything that connects to a computer, make sure it works with the operating system they use every day.

## Wacom Intuos Pro: the pen tablet upgrade

For anyone who retouches photos, draws or works with vector paths, a pen tablet is faster and more natural than a mouse. The [Wacom Intuos Pro](https://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-tablets/wacom-intuos-pro?ref=unknowndivide.com) is Wacom's professional pen tablet, and the current generation is notably slim at 4 millimeters thin, with a 16:9 active area that matches the shape of most modern displays.

It comes with the Wacom Pro Pen 3, which offers 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition of up to 60 degrees in each direction. That is what lets a brush stroke swell and taper the way it would on paper. The tablet comes in Small, Medium and Large sizes. The Small has five ExpressKeys and one dial, while the Medium and Large have ten ExpressKeys and two dials, all placed along the top edge. Each key and dial can be set to shortcuts like undo, zoom or brush size, so the other hand rarely needs the keyboard.

The Intuos Pro connects by Bluetooth or USB (Universal Serial Bus), can pair with up to three devices, and Wacom rates the battery at up to 16 hours. Wacom also notes it uses recycled materials. For most people, the Medium is the sensible size: large enough for comfortable strokes, small enough to share a desk with a keyboard.

## Logitech MX Master 3S: the mouse designers swear by

Even with a pen tablet, most designers spend hours with a mouse. The [Logitech MX Master 3S](https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/mice/mx-master-3s.910-006557.html?ref=unknowndivide.com) is built for exactly that kind of long, detailed work.

Its sensor runs up to 8,000 DPI (dots per inch), so the cursor moves precisely on large, high resolution displays, and it tracks on almost any surface including glass, as long as the glass is at least 4 millimeters thick. The MagSpeed electromagnetic scroll wheel can fly through long documents and artboards, then switch to precise line by line scrolling. Logitech says the Quiet Clicks are 90 percent quieter than the MX Master 3, which shared studios will appreciate.

The real advantage for designers is the Logi Options+ app. It lets the user assign different button functions for each application, so the thumb buttons can do one thing in a layout app and another in a photo editor. The thumb wheel scrolls horizontally, which is ideal for timelines and wide canvases.

## BenQ ScreenBar: better light for long nights

Designers stare at screens all day, and bad lighting makes that harder. A desk lamp often throws glare onto the monitor, while working in the dark leaves a harsh contrast between bright screen and dim room. The [BenQ ScreenBar](https://www.benq.com/en-us/lighting/monitor-light/screenbar.html?ref=unknowndivide.com) solves both problems by clamping to the top of the monitor and lighting the desk in front of it.

BenQ uses what it calls an asymmetrical optical design, which angles the light down onto the desk without causing reflective glare on the screen. A built-in ambient light sensor provides real-time auto dimming, supplementing the room light to reach a recommended 500 lux on the desk. Color temperature adjusts from 2700K warm white to 6500K cool white.

The detail that matters most to designers is color rendering. BenQ rates the ScreenBar at a Ra above 95 on the color rendering index, a measure of how faithfully a light shows colors, so paper swatches, sketches and printed proofs look true under it. It is powered by USB, and its patented clamp keeps the desk itself clear. If they would rather have a freestanding lamp, our guide to the [best design lamps](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-design-lamps/) has more ideas.

## Blackwing pencils: the sketcher's pencil

Plenty of design work still starts with a pencil, and Blackwing pencils are a favorite among people who draw for a living. They are recognizable by the flat, square ferrule and the replaceable eraser, and they come in a 12-pack gift box that doubles as a pencil cup.

Blackwing makes several core models, each with a different graphite. The [Blackwing 602](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-602-set-of-12?ref=unknowndivide.com) has a firm, smooth graphite and the famous imprint "Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed." Blackwing notes it was the pencil of choice for John Steinbeck and animator Chuck Jones before it was discontinued, and the company brought it back in 2011\. The [Blackwing Matte](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-set-of-12?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the softest of the core models, with a dark line that suits bold sketching and shading. The [Blackwing Pearl](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-pearl-set-of-12?ref=unknowndivide.com) sits between the two and is a favorite of calligraphers and illustrators, and the [Blackwing Natural](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-natural-set-of-12?ref=unknowndivide.com) uses an extra-firm graphite for fine line work.

If you are unsure, the 602 is the classic choice for writing and drafting, and the Matte is the pick for someone who mostly draws.

## Blackwing Notebook Essentials Set: a complete sketching kit

For a more complete gift, the [Blackwing 602 Notebook Essentials Set](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-602-notebook-essentials-set?ref=unknowndivide.com) bundles everything in one giftable box. It includes four Blackwing 602 pencils, a grey A5 Slate notebook with 160 pages of 100 GSM (grams per square meter) paper and an integrated pencil holster, and a One-Step Long Point Sharpener that creates a durable, curved long point. The notebook comes in a choice of three paper types.

A [Matte version](https://blackwing602.com/products/blackwing-matte-notebook-essentials-set?ref=unknowndivide.com) pairs the softer Blackwing Matte pencils with a black notebook and matching black accessories. Either makes a good gift for a designer who carries a sketchbook everywhere. For a planner rather than a sketchbook, see our guide to the [Hobonichi Techo](https://www.unknowndivide.com/hobonichi-techo/).

## A gift that keeps giving

Not every gift has to be a tool. A good design book can shape how someone works for years, and our list of the [best design books every designer should own](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-design-books-every-designer-should-own/) is a strong place to start. Pair a book with a box of Blackwing pencils and you have a thoughtful gift at almost any budget.
