Every record collection starts the same way: a few albums leaning against the wall next to the turntable. Then the stack grows, the sleeves start to bow, and one day a favorite record comes out of the pile with a gentle warp. Good storage is the cheapest way to protect the money and time you have put into vinyl, and good display is how a collection turns into part of the room.

This guide covers the basics of storing records properly, then walks through the main options: crates, shelving, desktop racks, sleeves and display stands. If you are still building the system that plays them, start with our guide to the [best turntables for beginners](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-turntables-for-beginners/).

## The rules of record storage

**Store records upright.** Records should stand vertically, like books on a shelf. Stacking them flat puts the weight of every album above onto the ones at the bottom, which can warp discs and wear rings into the covers over time.

**Keep them snug, not squeezed.** A row that is too loose lets records lean at an angle, and leaning for months can bend them. A row that is packed too tight makes it hard to pull a record out without scuffing the jacket. Aim for records that stand straight on their own and slide out with a light pull.

**Mind heat and light.** Vinyl softens with heat. Keep records away from radiators, heating vents and windows that get direct afternoon sun. A steady room temperature is ideal, and an interior wall is safer than an exterior one.

**Use sleeves.** An inner sleeve protects the disc from dust and scratches, and an outer sleeve protects the printed jacket from shelf wear. Both are inexpensive and make a visible difference to how a collection ages.

**Clean before you file.** A dusty record slid back into its sleeve just carries the dust along for the next play. Our guide to the [best record cleaning and care gear](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-record-cleaning-and-care-gear/) covers brushes and cleaning kits.

## Crates: the classic starting point

A wooden crate is the record collector's oldest storage trick, and it still works. Crates hold records upright, sit on the floor or a shelf, and can be carried to wherever the turntable is. They also stack once you have more than one.

The [Crosley Record Storage Crate](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/record-storage-crate-ac1004a?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a simple wooden box built for 12-inch albums, and Crosley sells it as a [3 pack](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/ac1004a3?ref=unknowndivide.com) too. Crosley describes the 3 pack as rustic, lightweight wooden crates with the Crosley logo on the side, which makes them easy to move around. Add the matching [A-Z record crate dividers](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/ac1045a?ref=unknowndivide.com) once a single crate starts to fill up, so finding an album means flipping to a letter rather than through the whole box.

For larger collections, Big Fudge makes a [record crate with a chalkboard front](https://bigfudge.com/products/record-crate-with-chalkboard?ref=unknowndivide.com) that holds up to 80 records, and you can label the chalkboard by genre or artist. Big Fudge also offers a [set of five Record Cube boxes](https://bigfudge.com/products/big-fudge-record-cube-vinyl-record-storage-holder-set-of-5-boxes-for-beloved-vinyl-with-blank-labels-to-keep-track-of-albums-inside-keeps-up-to-350-lp-records-safe-record-album-storage?ref=unknowndivide.com) that together keep up to 350 long play (LP) records, with blank labels so you know what is inside each box. Boxes like these are good for overflow or for records you play less often.

## Shelving: when a collection becomes furniture

Once a collection outgrows a crate or two, most people move to shelving. Cube shelving is the popular choice because a 12-inch record jacket fits neatly into each cube.

The [IKEA KALLAX](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-shelf-unit-white-20631663/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the best known example. IKEA lists the eight cube unit at a width of 30 1/8 inches, a depth of 15 3/8 inches and a height of 57 5/8 inches, with a maximum load of 29 pounds per shelf. That load limit matters, because records are heavy. A cube filled to the edges with albums can approach it, so fill each cube until the records stand straight on their own rather than cramming in every last one. KALLAX can stand vertically or horizontally, and IKEA sells inserts with doors or drawers separately if you want to hide the clutter around the records. IKEA is clear that the unit must be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping, and with a heavy collection inside, that step is not optional.

Crosley makes furniture built specifically for vinyl too, including the [Enzo](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/enzo-4-cube-record-player-stand-with-vinyl-storage-cf1128?ref=unknowndivide.com) and [Liam](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/liam-4-cube-record-player-stand-with-vinyl-storage-cf1131?ref=unknowndivide.com) cube stands, which put record storage below and a turntable on top. They are a tidy way to keep the whole setup in one place.

## Desktop racks: for the records you play most

A tabletop rack sits on a shelf, sideboard or desk and keeps your current rotation within reach. It is the right size for the twenty or thirty albums you return to every week.

The Big Fudge [Acacia Wood Record Storage holder](https://bigfudge.com/products/acacia-wood-record-storage-lp-holder-with-scratch-resistant-base?ref=unknowndivide.com) fits 30 to 40 records across four sections. Big Fudge says the wire dividers keep records upright to prevent warping, and EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) foam feet protect the furniture underneath. If your rotation keeps growing, the Big Fudge [expandable record rack](https://bigfudge.com/products/expandable-record-storage-lp-album-rack-scratch-resistant-vinyl-holder-stand?ref=unknowndivide.com) stretches to hold 50 to 75 records.

The Crosley [Record Storage Display Stand](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/ac1049a?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a solid wood stand that holds 20 to 30 records in 7-inch or 12-inch sizes and needs only minimal assembly. It works as a small rack and a display piece at the same time.

## Sleeves: the cheapest protection there is

Many records still ship in thin paper inner sleeves that can shed fibers or scuff the playing surface. Replacing them is one of the best small upgrades a collection can get.

Big Fudge sells two main types of inner sleeve. The [paper inner sleeves](https://bigfudge.com/products/inner-black?ref=unknowndivide.com) use heavyweight, acid-free paper. The Premium Master inner sleeves use three layers of HDPE (high density polyethylene) with a rice paper lining, which lets the record slide in and out with less friction.

For the jacket, Big Fudge [outer sleeves](https://bigfudge.com/products/vinyl-record-outer-sleeves2?ref=unknowndivide.com) are made from 3 mil HDPP (high density polypropylene), measure 12.75 by 12.75 inches, and are sized to fit gatefold and double albums as well as single records. A clear outer sleeve keeps shelf wear, dust and spills off the artwork while letting you still see every cover. It also makes a record easier to slide in and out of a tightly filled shelf.

## Display stands: put the album on the wall

Records are as much about the cover art as the music, and a display stand turns the record you are playing into the centerpiece of the room.

The Crosley [Now Spinning Record Stand](https://www.crosleyradio.com/products/ac1015b?ref=unknowndivide.com) is solid wood and fits single and most double LPs. Set it next to the turntable and swap the cover each time you change records. Big Fudge makes a [Vinyl Record Display Stand](https://bigfudge.com/products/big-fudge-wooden-record-holder-stand-now-playing-vinyl-record-stand-and-display-stand-record-storage-for-special-lp-albums-sapele-wood-rack-easel-stand-fits-regular-vinyl-or-gatefold-album?ref=unknowndivide.com) on a base that measures 8 by 3.75 inches and stands 8.75 inches tall. It holds one or two albums, so it suits a shelf or a narrow sideboard.

Whatever you display, keep it out of direct sunlight. Cover art fades, and a jacket on show by a sunny window will look tired within a year or two.

## How to choose

For a first collection of under a hundred records, a couple of crates and a pack of outer sleeves will do the job. For a growing collection, cube shelving anchored to the wall is the most efficient way to store a lot of records upright. For the albums you play every day, add a desktop rack near the turntable, and finish the setup with a Now Spinning stand.

Storage is the last step in a system that starts with the right playback gear.
