# Boards of Canada Tribute Book

For most of the last decade, writing about Boards of Canada meant writing about absence. The Scottish brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin had gone quiet after 2013, and the conversation around them became archaeology: decoding old records, trading theories, treating every stray frame of VHS grain as a clue. A book commissioned in that climate would have been a eulogy for a band that simply stopped. Instead, A Disco Pogo Tribute To Boards of Canada arrives in November with a completely different story, because this year the silence broke. Inferno, the duo's fifth studio album, came out on Warp on 29 May 2026, recorded at their Hexagon Sun studio in Scotland's Pentland Hills and their first since Tomorrow's Harvest in 2013\. 

The way they came back is worth remembering, because it is the most Boards of Canada thing imaginable and it hands this book a closing chapter no one expected to write. The campaign started in April with unlabeled VHS cassettes posted to fans and posters turning up in cities around the world, followed by a track first circulated as "Tape 05" and later titled "Deep Time." Listening sessions followed in seven locations, and the rollout even drew a public dispute when the White House borrowed the album's look for political messaging, a move Warp condemned. A band that built its legend on hiding managed, in one spring, to become impossible to miss. 

That is the context that turns this from a nice shelf object into a timely one. The book is the fifth in Disco Pogo's Tribute series after volumes on Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, LCD Soundsystem and Andrew Weatherall, and the publisher calls Boards of Canada the most requested subject since the series began. It carries the series format of timeline, family tree, album essays, thinkpieces, features, discography and gear list, with writing from Simon Reynolds, David Keenan and Elizabeth Alker among others. Reynolds sets the tone on the book's page with a line about how few artists have built a cult as completely as this pair. More telling is the fine print: it is independently written and published, but with the blessing of both the band and Warp. For two people who have granted so little over the years, that nod carries weight.

The section to watch is the gear list. So much of what makes a Boards of Canada record sound like a memory rather than a recording lives in hardware and process: the tape wobble, the detuned pads, the saturation that makes Music Has the Right to Children, and Geogaddi feel dug up rather than made. Inferno was produced in the same Hexagon Sun space where that sound was forged, which means a well-researched rundown of the machines now spans nearly three decades of continuity instead of stopping at 2013\. If the book gets that right, it becomes a reference for producers as much as a keepsake for fans.
