Some albums sound like a place. For Emma, Forever Ago sounds like winter: quiet, close and a little lonely, with warmth glowing at the center. Bon Iver's first full length album is an intimate, deeply personal record, and it is a beautiful record to own on vinyl. Here is the story behind it, what is on the LP and where to buy a copy.

## The story

[Jagjaguwar](https://jagjaguwar.com/release/jag115/?ref=unknowndivide.com) released For Emma, Forever Ago on February 19, 2008, as catalog number JAG115, on CD, LP and cassette. The label's own release notes tell how it came together, and it was not planned.

According to Jagjaguwar, Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. The goal was to hibernate. He lived there alone for three months, splitting wood and doing chores around the land. That solitary time slowly fed a bold new musical focus, and the days became nights of twelve hour recording blocks, broken only by trips into the pines to saw and haul firewood.

The label describes the songs as a purge of everything that had built up over the previous six years: personal trouble, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt. It calls the record entirely cohesive, centered on an aesthetic prompted by the time and place in which it was made.

Even the name has a story. Jagjaguwar explains that Bon Iver is French for good winter, spelled wrong on purpose, and pronounced bohn eevair.

## The vinyl

The [official Bon Iver store](https://store.boniver.org/products/for-emma-forever-ago-lp-us?ref=unknowndivide.com) lists the LP with these details:

- **Format:** 33 1/3 RPM 12 inch black vinyl LP.
- **Packaging:** a two sided, matte finished jacket with a single sided insert.
- **Extras:** a digital download card.

The matte jacket suits the record perfectly. It feels as soft and understated as the music inside.

## Tracklist

The album fits on one LP, with nine songs across two sides.

**Side A**

1. Flume
2. Lump Sum
3. Skinny Love
4. The Wolves (Act I and II)

**Side B**

1. Blindsided
2. Creature Fear
3. Team
4. For Emma
5. Re: Stacks

## Why it is cool on vinyl

This is a record made by one person in one room, and it feels intimate in a way few albums do. Layered voices, acoustic guitar and small, homemade details fill the space, and those details are the reason to listen closely. Vinyl encourages exactly that kind of listening. You put on side A, sit down and let it play through.

The split works well, too. Side A opens with Flume and moves through Skinny Love before the long build of The Wolves. Side B is slower and more reflective, ending with Re: Stacks, a gentle, quiet close that rewards anyone who stays for the whole record.

It is also a great winter record in the most literal sense. Put it on during a snowy evening and it makes perfect sense.

## How to listen

This is a record for a quiet room. Play it start to finish at a modest volume, ideally late in the evening, and let the voices and guitar fill the space. Read the lyrics on a second listen; many lines are hard to make out at first, and seeing them on the page changes how the songs land. Then flip it back to side one and start again.
