If you have ever seen a bird boiled down to a few perfect shapes, or a National Park poster that looks like nature run through a geometry class, you have met [Charley Harper](https://www.charleyharperartstudio.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com). And somehow, until today, the man never had a museum retrospective. That changes now. [The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame](https://www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/art/exhibitions/the-art-of-charley-harper-creatures-wild-and-tame/?ref=unknowndivide.com) opens October 16 at the [Cincinnati Art Museum](https://www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/?ref=unknowndivide.com), and it is the museum's first full-scale, scholarly show of his work.

"It's hard to believe, but this is Charley's first museum retrospective," says Brett Harper, his son and the director of the Charley Harper Art Studio, which partnered with the museum on the show.

## The paintings almost nobody has seen

The headline is a set of 10 large paintings Harper made on commission for the U.S. National Park Service. They were the originals behind his now iconic park posters, and according to the museum they were only on public display in Washington, D.C., for a short stretch in the 1990s before going into archives. Brett Harper calls them "jewel-like acrylic masterpieces by an artist at the peak of his powers." This is the first time they have come back to Cincinnati since he finished them.

Three more paintings are on loan from Everglades National Park, packed with the plants and animals of that Florida ecosystem. Around them sit maquettes and drawings that show how he actually built those images, plus screen prints, acrylics, watercolors, collages and posters. The museum counts more than 140 works in all.

## Minimal realism, explained

Harper had his own name for his style: minimal realism. He boiled animals down to their essential shapes and colors, then gave them a sense of humor. The feature image here, Impala in the Grass (Daytime) from around 1961, is a perfect example. One calm antelope sits in a wall of yellow strokes, and the longer you look, the more you notice the grass is not empty.

That clean, flat, witty look is a big reason designers still worship him. He studied and taught at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, spent his career in the city, and used his work to fight for wild places threatened by development. Curator Julie Aronson puts it simply: Harper was "a student of nature whose unique work expresses a deep sense of wonder and discovery."

The museum has shown him before, but only in two small shows in 2007 and 2010 that stuck to work made before 1960\. This one covers his entire career.

## Edie gets her moment too

Here is the part that makes this a weekend trip. Across town, the [Taft Museum of Art](https://www.taftmuseum.org/exhibitions/edieharper/?ref=unknowndivide.com) opens Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play on October 17, the first solo museum exhibition for Charley's wife and lifelong creative partner. It runs through January 24, 2027, and the two museums are planning a joint panel on both artists.

## The book to own

The show comes with a roughly 250-page catalog co-published with D Giles, packed with more than 200 illustrations and essays from curator Julie Aronson, Michael Bierut, Julie Zickefoose, Sarah Archer and Brett Harper. You can pick up [The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame](https://www.amazon.com/dp/1917273258?tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com) now. If you want a second Harper book for the shelf, [Beguiled by the Wild: The Art of Charley Harper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/0764972294?tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com) is another Harper book worth a spot next to it.

## Plan your visit

The exhibition runs through March 7, 2027\. It is ticketed and free for members, and it is free for everyone on Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 pm, plus during Art After Dark on October 30, January 29 and February 26\. Photography is allowed, no flash. The museum is running free exhibition tours every Thursday night, and the hashtag is #HarperWildandTame.

## Our call

This is a Signal. A first-ever retrospective for one of the most copied visual styles in American design, a hidden set of National Park originals and a companion Edie Harper show next door add up to the design trip of the season.
