Some knives win people over with a dramatic shape or an exotic steel. The Civivi Elementum does it by being sensible. It is a small, flat, easy to carry flipper with a blade that is big enough for real chores and a handle that disappears in a pocket. If you are building an everyday carry (EDC) kit and want one folding knife that does not draw attention to itself, it deserves a close look.

## The basics

We looked at the C907A-3 version on [Civivi's product page](https://www.civivi.com/products/civivi-elementum-c907a-3?ref=unknowndivide.com), which pairs an ivory G10 handle with a gray stainless steel liner and a satin finished blade. The numbers that matter most:

- **Blade length:** 2.96 inches
- **Overall length:** 6.99 inches open, 4.03 inches closed
- **Blade thickness:** 3 millimeters
- **Handle thickness:** 11 millimeters
- **Weight:** 78.7 grams
- **Steel:** D2, hardened to 59 to 61 on the Rockwell hardness C scale (HRC)
- **Grind and shape:** hollow grind, drop point
- **Pivot:** caged ceramic ball bearing
- **Lock:** liner lock
- **Clip:** tip up, right hand carry, stainless steel

## A size that makes sense

A blade just under three inches hits a useful middle ground. It is long enough to break down boxes, slice an apple or trim rope, but short enough that the knife closes to about four inches. That closed length is the number that determines how a knife feels in a pocket, and at roughly the length of a car key fob with a bit extra, the Elementum slips into jeans without printing much.

The 11 millimeter handle thickness helps too. Thick knives tend to rotate in a pocket and press against your leg when you sit. A slim handle stays flat against the seam. At under 80 grams, it is light enough that you stop noticing it after a day or two, which is really the goal of any carry knife.

## D2 steel and the hollow grind

D2 is a tool steel, and Civivi heat treats it here to 59 to 61 HRC. Higher hardness generally means a blade holds an edge longer before it needs sharpening. The tradeoff is that D2 is not a stainless steel in the strictest sense, so it is worth wiping the blade dry after cutting anything wet or acidic and adding a drop of oil now and then if you live somewhere humid.

The hollow grind matters for cutting feel. A hollow ground blade thins quickly behind the edge, which helps it slip through cardboard, tape and food with less effort. Combined with a drop point shape, where the spine curves gently down to the tip, you get a strong point that still offers precision for detail work like opening packages or cutting zip ties.

## The flipper and the bearing

The Elementum opens with a flipper tab on the spine. You press the tab with your index finger and the blade swings open. What makes it feel smooth is the pivot. Civivi uses a caged ceramic ball bearing, where small balls held in a ring sit between the blade and the liners. Instead of the blade grinding against washers, it rolls on the bearings, so opening takes very little force and feels consistent from the first day.

Closing is handled by a liner lock. A section of the stainless steel liner springs inward behind the blade when it opens, holding it in place. To close, you push that liner aside with your thumb and fold the blade home. Liner locks are simple, familiar and easy to operate with one hand. If you want a deeper comparison of mechanisms, our [guide to pocket knife lock types](https://www.unknowndivide.com/pocket-knife-lock-types-explained/) covers liner locks alongside frame locks, back locks and more.

## Handle and clip

G10 is a fiberglass laminate that is light, strong and largely unaffected by moisture. On the C907A-3 it comes in a patterned ivory finish that looks cleaner than the usual black, and the texture gives your fingers some grip without chewing up pocket linings. The stainless steel clip is set up for tip up, right hand carry, which means the point sits at the top of the pocket when the knife is closed.

If you prefer a different handle material, Civivi makes the Elementum in several versions. One option on our shop list below uses Ultem, a lightweight thermoplastic, under the model number C907A-4, and Civivi lists all of its [D2 steel knives](https://www.civivi.com/collections/d2?ref=unknowndivide.com) in one place.

## How it compares

The Elementum sits in a crowded part of the market. The [Kershaw Leek](https://www.unknowndivide.com/kershaw-leek-1660-pocket-knife/) is slimmer and assisted, while the [Spyderco Delica 4](https://www.unknowndivide.com/spyderco-delica-4-lightweight-pocket-knife/) is lighter and opens with a thumb hole. The [Opinel No. 08](https://www.unknowndivide.com/opinel-no-08-folding-knife/) is the traditional choice if you want wood and simplicity. The Elementum's case rests on its smooth bearing pivot, its hard D2 blade and a compact shape that feels more refined than its size suggests.

## Who it suits

This is a good first serious folder for someone moving up from a basic utility knife, and a good second knife for anyone who already owns a larger blade but wants something lighter for office days. It is not the right pick if you want a large blade for outdoor work, or if you need a fully stainless steel that can be ignored in wet conditions. For daily chores, opening mail and packages and general utility, it is very easy to live with.
