Thrill Jockey has opened preorders for [something good](https://thrilljockey.com/products/something-good?ref=unknowndivide.com), the debut album by [claire rousay and zander raymond](https://thrilljockey.com/artists/claire-rousay-and-zander-raymond?ref=unknowndivide.com). rousay works out of Los Angeles and raymond out of Chicago, and the record grew out of an open-ended exchange between the two that, in the label's words, gradually became something good. The first song you can hear is "can't we have both," released this week, and it sets the tone for a record that sounds like two people leaving the tape running in rooms they actually live in.

## Pop songs and room sound

Thrill Jockey describes the album as a close collaboration that moves between pop song structures and new music abstraction, "casual music made from domestic spaces." The instrument list is wide for a record this intimate: piano, synthesizer, electric guitar, harmonica, pipe organ and vocals. The pair recorded in homes and in studios, and the back of the sleeve lists the cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Santa Fe, between February and August 2026.

The way it was made is part of the point. raymond says it "was made far more spontaneously... more just playing," and rousay calls it "a document of 'making a record.'" Room sound and reverb are treated as material rather than polish, so the sense of place keeps shifting from track to track. raymond puts the range of the process plainly: music making as "a broad umbrella that spans from sitting down intentionally to compose and leaving a field recorder rolling."

## Titles from text messages

The song titles have their own origin story. According to raymond, they are "all snippets of text messages from the inauguration of the collaboration." That explains names like "free monday," "blue shirt always," "boat rack" and "some good news," which read like a phone screen at the end of a long day. The sequence opens with "driving" and closes on "major freedom," with "can't we have both" sitting third.

The credits are tight. Both artists recorded it, rousay mixed it, Sean McCann mastered it and JJ Golden cut the lacquers. raymond handled art and design, with additional effects by Daniel Castrejón. The sleeve matches the music: a cream jacket, a scatter of small red dots and plain lowercase type.

## Formats

Thrill Jockey lists the album (catalog number thrill-670) as a translucent red color vinyl LP and as a digital download, both on preorder now, with release set for 2027\. The red pressing against that pale sleeve makes a strong object. Preorder through the [Thrill Jockey store](https://thrilljockey.com/products/something-good?ref=unknowndivide.com), and keep an eye on [claire rousay's Bandcamp](https://clairerousay.bandcamp.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) and [zander raymond's Bandcamp](https://zanderraymond.bandcamp.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) for more as the release gets closer.

## Our call

This one is Surfacing. A debut built on text message titles, pipe organ and the hum of real rooms is exactly the kind of quiet record that ends up on repeat all winter. Start with "can't we have both" and grab the red vinyl while it is still listed.
