Some record labels chase trends. Constellation stays put. For close to three decades it has released records from one city, kept almost every one of them in print and built a catalog that runs from slow, swelling instrumental rock to free jazz, experimental Arabic music and wiry post-punk. If you have ever wondered where the quieter, stranger side of Canadian independent music comes from, this is the label to start with.

Here is a short history of Constellation and eight albums that make a good first listen.

## A short history of Constellation

Constellation was started in Montreal in 1997 by a small group of friends. In the notes for one of its later releases, the founders recall that among the first records they bonded over was a Vic Chesnutt album played so often that its grooves were worn down. That kind of devotion shaped everything that followed.

The label is unusually clear about its principles. Its [info page](https://cstrecords.com/pages/info?ref=unknowndivide.com) explains that it primarily releases music made by artists from Montréal or with a Montréal connection, then from the rest of Canada, and that this geographical focus is central to its ethos. It keeps its entire catalog in print, with packaging that keeps most of the original details, including foil-stamped and screenprinted jackets on specialty art papers for many early titles. It does not press colored vinyl. And it has a no advertisement policy: artists who release music on Constellation agree that those recordings will not be licensed for advertising.

Much of the catalog was recorded at Hotel2Tango, the Montreal studio that shows up again and again in the stories below. Mail orders from the label's own store are still packed and shipped from its office in Montréal.

## 8 essential Constellation albums

### 1\. A Silver Mt. Zion: He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms... (2000)

Released on March 27, 2000, [this debut](https://cstrecords.com/products/a-silver-mt-zion-he-has-left-us-alone-but-shafts-of-light-sometimes-grace-the-corner-of-our-rooms?ref=unknowndivide.com) began as a trio of Efrim Menuck, Thierry Amar and Sophie Trudeau, formed in 1999\. They recorded it on an 8-track machine at Hotel2Tango in November of that year, and Menuck dedicated the album to his dog, Wanda. The music is piano, strings, guitar and tape hiss, mournful and patient, and it set the tone for a band that would grow much larger over the next decade under a string of longer names. Start here if you want the label's most emotional side.

### 2\. Do Make Say Think: Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Dead (2000)

Do Make Say Think came from Toronto, and their [second album](https://cstrecords.com/products/do-make-say-think-goodbye-enemy-airship-the-landlord-is-dead?ref=unknowndivide.com) came out the same day as the Silver Mt. Zion debut. The band recorded it in an old wooden barn outside their hometown, and you can still hear crickets in the background. The record opens and closes with big, psychedelic guitar surges, but much of the middle is reflective and loose, with jazz horn passages, two drummers giving each other room and small electronic crackles tucked into the mix. The label suggests headphones, and it is right.

### 3\. Vic Chesnutt: North Star Deserter (2007)

The songwriter Vic Chesnutt made [North Star Deserter](https://cstrecords.com/products/vic-chesnutt-north-star-deserter?ref=unknowndivide.com) at Hotel2Tango over the winter of 2006 and 2007, after the filmmaker Jem Cohen proposed the session. Cohen produced, Howard Bilerman engineered, and the backing band included all seven members of the Silver Mt. Zion orchestra plus a handful of Montreal and American friends. Released on September 11, 2007, it is one of the most intense records in Chesnutt's long career, at once macabre, funny, deeply personal and strangely hopeful. For a label built on instrumental music, it proves how well its players can serve a great singer.

### 4\. Colin Stetson: New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges (2011)

Colin Stetson plays saxophone like nobody else. [Judges](https://cstrecords.com/products/colin-stetson-new-history-warfare-vol-2-judges?ref=unknowndivide.com), released on February 22, 2011, was his second solo record and his first for Constellation. Using circular breathing, he keeps an unbroken flow of notes going while tapping the keys for percussion and singing through the reed at the same time. The result sounds like a whole band, though it is one man and one horn. It is the best proof that the label's taste reaches well beyond rock.

### 5\. Matana Roberts: Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres (2011)

Alto saxophonist Matana Roberts began spending long stretches in Montreal in the second half of the 2000s, and her Coin Coin project grew into a multi-chapter work that mixes graphic scores, storytelling and family history. [Chapter One](https://cstrecords.com/products/matana-roberts-coin-coin-chapter-one-gens-de-couleur-libres?ref=unknowndivide.com), released on May 10, 2011, was recorded live at Hotel2Tango in front of about 30 friends and supporters. The full 90-minute performance was edited down to around an hour. It is raw, moving and unlike any jazz record you are likely to own.

### 6\. Jerusalem In My Heart: Mo7it Al-Mo7it (2013)

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, a Lebanese musician who is also a sound engineer and co-owner of Hotel2Tango, formed Jerusalem In My Heart in 2005\. For years the project resisted any official recording. [Mo7it Al-Mo7it](https://cstrecords.com/products/jerusalem-in-my-heart-mo7it-al-mo7it?ref=unknowndivide.com), released on March 19, 2013, finally captured it, made with French producer Jérémie Regnier and Chilean filmmaker Malena Szlam Salazar. It weds melismatic singing in classic Arabic styles with blown-out contemporary electronic production.

### 7\. Esmerine: Dalmak (2013)

Esmerine is led by marimba player Bruce Cawdron and cellist Rebecca Foon. After European tours brought the band to Istanbul, it was invited back for an artist residency, and most of [Dalmak](https://cstrecords.com/products/esmerine-dalmak?ref=unknowndivide.com) was recorded there with four Turkish guest players. The title is a Turkish verb meaning to dive into or be absorbed in, which fits music that blends chamber strings, hand percussion and Turkish instruments. It was released on September 3, 2013.

### 8\. Ought: More Than Any Other Day (2014)

Ought formed in Montreal in 2012, rehearsing and playing their first show in a shared apartment before spilling into the city's lofts and the streets during that spring's student strike. [More Than Any Other Day](https://cstrecords.com/products/ought-more-than-any-other-day?ref=unknowndivide.com), recorded at Hotel2Tango in November 2013 and released on April 29, 2014, is sharp, nervy post-punk led by Tim Beeler's speak-sung vocals. It is the most immediate record on this list and a good one to play for a friend who thinks the label only makes slow music.

## Where to go next

Once those eight have settled in, two newer records show where the label has gone since. [Galaxy Heart](https://cstrecords.com/products/cst168-jessica-moss-galaxy-heart?ref=unknowndivide.com) by the Montreal violinist Jessica Moss, released in October 2022, completes the body of work she wrote, performed and self-produced in isolation through 2020, adding spiky, semi-improvised electric guitar to her violin. [Crease](https://cstrecords.com/products/kee-avil-crease?ref=unknowndivide.com) by Kee Avil, released in March 2022, is the debut of the project led by Montréal producer and guitarist Vicky Mettler, mixing chiselled post-punk guitar, low-end electronics and anxious, intimate vocals.
