Bowie is going back on the road, one archive box at a time. [David Bowie: On Tour](https://www.vam.ac.uk/dundee/whatson/exhibitions/david-bowie-on-tour?ref=unknowndivide.com) opens at V&A Dundee on Wednesday, November 4, the first stop for the V&A's new UK wide touring show built from its David Bowie archive. It brings together around 100 highlights, and many of them have never been on public display before. It runs in Gallery 2 until February 15, 2027.

## Four sections, one creative process

The show is less a greatest hits wall and more a look at how Bowie worked. Across four sections it follows how he built his image, his music and his screen work, using costumes, instruments, photography and the paperwork he never threw away. It is curated by Harriet Reed, Curator of Contemporary Performance at the V&A.

## Bowie Through a Lens

The opening section is about photography and how it shaped who Bowie became, with work by Terry O'Neill, Mick Rock, Sukita, Brian Ward and others.

## All the Somebody People

The second section takes four eras on stage and in the studio. Ziggy Stardust brings costumes by Freddie Burretti and Kansai Yamamoto, handwritten notes and cut ups for the album, tour sketches and a Ziggy era acoustic guitar shown for the first time. The Berlin years cover his work with Tony Visconti and Brian Eno on Low, Heroes and Lodger, with the keys to his apartment at Hauptstraße 155, unseen concept art for the Low cover and the Japanese koto he played on Moss Garden. Let's Dance shows how he drew the blueprint for stadium touring, including a Serious Moonlight set design never shown before. Blackstar closes the loop with his handwritten lyrics for the title track and the hand painted costume from the Lazarus video.

## Hooked to the Silver Screen

The screen section is a treat for anyone who grew up on his videos and films. Expect his storyboard sketches and the Natasha Korniloff costume for Ashes to Ashes, contact sheets from his first film set, The Image, the clapperboard from The Man Who Fell to Earth, prep notes for Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and his Labyrinth script, character notes and Polaroids from the Jareth costume fittings. There is even a script for an episode of The Simpsons that he politely turned down.

## I Can't Give Everything Away

The last section is the most personal. It has his first instrument, a Grafton alto saxophone his father bought him in 1961, the harmonica microphone from A Reality Tour, the stopwatch he used while songwriting, his 1988 passport and his advance copy of the Velvet Underground's I'm Waiting for the Man. Add handwritten to do lists, charts of projects he never got to, and a synopsis for an unmade TV film called The Catastrophy Cabinet, and you get a picture of a mind that was always on the next thing.

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. A touring Bowie show means people outside London finally get close to the archive, starting in Scotland.
