DIIV's new album is out today. [ZIRP](https://ffm.to/diiv-zirp?ref=unknowndivide.com), officially styled with an exclamation point, arrived on Friday, October 30 through Fantasy Records, part of the Concord Label Group. It is the band's fifth album, eleven songs produced by British producer A. G. Cook, and the band is calling it, in plain words on the [official album page](https://concord.com/concord-albums/zirp/?ref=unknowndivide.com), "our POP record."

Dare Me by DIIV, the official music video from the band's YouTube channel.

## A pop record, on purpose

For a band best known for shoegaze, the wall-of-guitar style built on heavy effects pedals and buried vocals, that is a bold line. The band's own statement leans all the way in: this is not a niche record for music understanders only, it is an accessible mainstream alternative rock record, and where their last album was serious, this one is fun. "Life is hard. ZIRP is easy," it ends.

The title is not a joke, though. According to the [official announcement from Concord Records](https://www.concordrecords.com/blogs/news/diiv-officially-announces-new-album-zirp?ref=unknowndivide.com), ZIRP stands for the zero interest rate policies that fueled a decade of failed startups and turned all of us into "users." The record picks up the themes of 2024's Frog In Boiling Water, with Palantir, societal breakdown and the endless wheel of streaming all showing up as material for bright, hooky songs. DIIV is Zachary Cole Smith, Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield and Ben Newman, and the label frames the album as the band naming a sound they have chased for years: The New Alternative.

## What A. G. Cook changed

The most interesting part of the story is how the record got made. The label's announcement says the band first approached A. G. Cook, known for his work with Caroline Polachek and Charli XCX, about tearing their demos apart and rebuilding them. He passed on that idea. "That hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me," he says in the announcement. Instead he went to their shows, got hooked on how they sound live, and insisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were finished. The sessions focused on intricate guitar parts run through specific pedals, with as little computer work as possible.

That is a fun twist. The pop producer pushed the guitar band toward its live, physical self, and the pop sheen came from tighter songs rather than software. The official credits on the videos list Cook as producer, Quint Bishop as engineer and mixer, and Robin Schmidt on mastering.

Dare Me, the video above, was directed by Louie Kovatch and edited by Cole Smith.

## Vinyl, CD and bundles

The [Concord Records DIIV store](https://www.concordrecords.com/collections/diiv?ref=unknowndivide.com) carries the album on [neon orange vinyl](https://www.concordrecords.com/products/diiv-zirp-neon-orange-vinyl?ref=unknowndivide.com), an opaque silver vinyl with a signed 8x10 print, a [compact disc (CD)](https://www.concordrecords.com/products/diiv-zirp-cd?ref=unknowndivide.com) and a [digital download](https://www.concordrecords.com/products/diiv-zirp-digital-download?ref=unknowndivide.com) that comes in your choice of compressed or lossless audio files. There are also vinyl bundles with a tee, hoodie and hat. The fluorescent pink vinyl with a signed print is already listed as sold out, so the colored pressings are moving. For merch and live dates, [the official DIIV site](https://diiv.net/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the place to check.

## Our call

DIIV saying "this is our pop record" could have gone badly. What makes it worth a listen is that the band and producer went toward the sound of a band in a room, not away from it. If the hazy guitar records in our [shoegaze starter guide](https://www.unknowndivide.com/shoegaze-starter-guide-essential-albums/) are your thing, start with The Fountain and see how far the hooks pull you. It also lands on a big release day alongside [Queens of the Stone Age's Perfecth](https://www.unknowndivide.com/queens-of-the-stone-age-perfecth-october-30/), and pairs well with the recent [Fontaines D.C. album Dopamine Chamber](https://www.unknowndivide.com/fontaines-dc-dopamine-chamber-album-out-now-rosalia/).
