It is their first full-length album since Over the Under in 2007, after two Down IV EPs in 2012 and 2014\. The song now on Release Radar is its opening track, "The Myth," which came out as a single on October 7 with an official video from the label. "The Myth" is not the lead single. That was "Blood Oath," which arrived with the album announcement on August 19\. Nuclear Blast calls "The Myth" the latest single, and it runs just over five minutes. Video: Nuclear Blast Records ## What the band says about The Myth The [label's announcement](https://www.nuclearblast.com/blogs/news/down-release-video-for-new-single-the-myth-new-album-volume-v-out-november-20th?ref=unknowndivide.com) describes the song as a barnburner with a powerhouse vocal, pummeling rhythms and precise down-picking. Anselmo says it has "some epic moments" and calls it "a jammer," with "a big nod to Trouble." Vocally, he says, he was thinking of James Dewar, Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne and Glenn Hughes. Keenan calls it "classic DOWN in all its hammer fisted glory leading into a '70s jam trip," and bassist Pat Bruders says it is "one of those songs that almost wrote itself." ## Who is in DOWN now The lineup has changed over the years. Kirk Windstein of Crowbar sat out the 2014 EP, according to the band's own site. For Volume V, both the band and the label list the same five: Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod, and Pat Bruders. The band's official story goes back to their teens, when they crossed paths in local New Orleans bands, and to a three-song demo from 1991 that led to their 1995 debut, NOLA. ## How Volume V was made Most of the album came out of two writing sessions in 2025 at Nodferatu's Lair, Anselmo's home studio and the band's clubhouse since Down II. The songs were jammed out face to face, and Keenan and Windstein recorded their guitars together in the same room. Eddie Mapp produced it with the band, Dave Fortman mixed it, and Maor Appelbaum mastered it in California. After "The Myth" comes "Merciful Fate," a vocal duel between Anselmo and King Diamond, with dark accents from King Diamond's wife Livia Zita. The closer, "Twice-Told Tales," is one Anselmo calls "an important song to us," adding that he felt Ozzy Osbourne's influence on it "in the strangest way." The cover art is a battered amp-style panel with the gothic DOWN logo, a glowing red VU meter pushed past zero into LOUD, and a plate that reads Volume V. ## Track list 1\. The Myth 2\. Merciful Fate (feat. King Diamond) 3\. Turn Out the Light 4\. The Message 5\. Causeway Grief 6\. Blood Oath 7\. They Walk the Night 8\. They Came From Dust 9\. Ozz 10\.
