EarthQuaker Devices, the pedal company that builds its effects by hand in Akron, Ohio, has put two of its best-loved overdrives into smaller boxes and given them a new voice. The [Plumes Jr MOSFET Mod Limited Edition Small Signal Shredder](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/plumes-mosfet-mod?ref=unknowndivide.com) is for guitar, and the [Blumes Jr MOSFET Mod Limited Edition Low Signal Shredder](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/blumes-mosfet-mod?ref=unknowndivide.com) is for bass. Both are strictly limited runs, and both are out now.

## What actually changed

If you know the full-size [Plumes](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/plumes?ref=unknowndivide.com), you know the trick: three clipping voices on one toggle switch. Clipping is the part of an overdrive circuit that shapes how the signal breaks up, and each voice gives a different flavor of grit. On the Jr versions, the third voice is gone. EarthQuaker says it pulled out the asymmetrical silicon diode setup, the one closest to a stock screamer-style overdrive, and replaced it with clipping built on a MOSFET, short for metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor.

The company describes the result as harmonically rich and focused, with more low end and a dynamic feel similar to a modern high-gain tube amp. The switch positions now carry letters instead of numbers:

- **L:** symmetrical clipping through a pair of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). EarthQuaker calls it the crunchiest, most compressed and mid-focused setting.
- **N:** no clipping diodes at all, just wide-open operational amplifier (op amp) drive. Use it as a clean boost or to push an amp that is already breaking up.
- **M:** the new MOSFET mode, with more low end and sustain.

Modes L and N stay true to the first two modes of the original circuits, according to the official video notes. The knobs are the familiar trio of Level, Gain and Tone, with Tone sweeping from more bass on the left through more mids in the middle to more treble on the right.

## One for guitar, one for bass

Plumes Jr keeps the clarity and midrange punch of the guitar original in a smaller footprint. Blumes Jr takes the same core circuit, doubles the gain and deepens the bass response, so the low end stays clear while the bass cuts through a mix. On the [Blumes](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/blumes?ref=unknowndivide.com) side, EarthQuaker notes that mode N is the loudest with the fullest frequency response, and works as a clean boost with the Gain knob set below 11 o'clock.

## The specs

Both pedals share the same junior enclosure, 1.50 by 3.75 by 2.00 inches (38 by 95 by 51 millimeters) with knobs. They draw 25 milliamps (mA) from a standard 9 volt direct current (DC) supply with a 2.1mm center-negative barrel, use mechanical true bypass switching, and carry EarthQuaker's limited lifetime warranty. The artwork, a pattern of swirling circles, is by Jamie Stillman, who [founded EarthQuaker Devices in 2004](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/about?ref=unknowndivide.com) and still designs every pedal in-house.

## Where to get them

EarthQuaker is clear that these do not replace the standard Plumes and Blumes, which are staying in the lineup. The Jr MOSFET Mods are available for a limited time through [authorized EarthQuaker Devices dealers](https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/dealers?ref=unknowndivide.com) worldwide, and each product page has audio samples for every mode, recorded through guitars and amps like a Gibson Les Paul into a Marshall JTM45.

## Our call

The original Plumes is already one of the easiest overdrives to recommend, which is why it has its own spot in our [Plumes explainer](https://www.unknowndivide.com/earthquaker-devices-plumes-overdrive/). Swapping the most familiar mode for a heavier MOSFET voice makes the Jr feel like a different pedal rather than a shrunken one, and it is a smart move for players who palm mute or tune low. Limited runs do not wait, so if the mode M samples land for you, check a dealer soon.
