[Square Enix](https://www.square-enix.com/finalfantasyresonance/?ref=unknowndivide.com) has released the first Final Fantasy game built in its HD-2D style, the look that mixes pixel-art characters with modern 3D lighting and depth, on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Square Enix's [North America press hub](https://press.na.square-enix.com/FINAL-FANTASY-RESONANCE?ref=unknowndivide.com) lists the release date as October 22, 2026, and the game has been trending on Google in the US since just after midnight Eastern. It is a role-playing game (RPG) with a tale of crystals at its center, built from the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The publisher is clear that this is not a straight port. It says the story has been refined and extensively rebuilt as a full console-quality RPG, developed with the studio LANCARSE according to the [Steam listing](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3259780/FINAL%5FFANTASY%5FRESONANCE/?ref=unknowndivide.com). The old furniture is all here. Chocobos, espers, moogles and airships return, and familiar faces such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light show up as Visions, echoes of classic characters who fight alongside your party with their own skills. In a September trailer, Square Enix also confirmed that Sephiroth appears in the game, and you can track him down and challenge him for a special reward. ## How it plays Battles are turn-based with a modern twist. You hit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, which breaks their defenses, earns extra turns and opens the door to powerful Resonance attacks. Special abilities from the legacy heroes and some summon sequences switch to full 3D, so the fights look bigger than the pixel art suggests. There is plenty to do off the main path, too. The Steam page lists the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum stocked with deadly monsters, the Chamber of Arms with foes sealed inside legendary weapons, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon. ## Editions and the demo There are three ways in. The standard game is out on every platform, a Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Magitek and Grimoire Deluxe Pack of in-game items, and a Collector's Edition from the [Square Enix Store](https://na.store.square-enix-games.com/final-fantasy-resonance?ref=unknowndivide.com) adds physical extras including an artbook, a soundtrack and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promo card. The Steam listing also names an early purchase bonus, the Squire Kickstart Pack, for anyone who buys by November 6. If you played the free demo, your save carries over. HD-2D has already carried Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest remakes, and putting Final Fantasy's crystals, airships and summons into that style is the obvious next step.
