Vienna is about to throw Franz West the birthday party he would probably have hated and secretly loved. The [ALBERTINA Museum](https://www.albertina.at/en/albertina-modern/exhibitions/franz-west/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is opening **Franz West: The Revolution of Sculpture** at the Albertina Modern on **November 6, 2026**, a full retrospective for one of the most influential and least polite artists Austria ever produced. It runs through March 29, 2027.

## Franz West at the Albertina Modern

West lived from 1947 to 2012, and the show marks what would have been his 80th birthday in February 2027\. The museum describes him as a nonconformist with a willful, funny, unruly personality, and the résumé backs up the reputation: multiple editions of documenta, multiple Venice Biennales, and the Biennale's Golden Lion in 2011.

The Albertina is not doing this alone. Two exhibitions open in Vienna around the same date: this retrospective, and Franz West and Vienna at the [Wien Museum](https://www.wienmuseum.at/en?ref=unknowndivide.com), his hometown paying tribute twice over.

## Franz West sculpture: art you were meant to touch

The story starts in the 1970s. Working in the shadow of Viennese Actionism, West came up with his Adaptives, odd, prosthesis-like objects meant to be worn, held and pressed against the body. They only made sense once someone picked them up. As the Albertina puts it, objects became opportunities and art became a situation. That idea, that sculpture is something that happens between a thing and a person rather than a thing on a plinth, is the revolution in the title.

From there his work spread out in every direction. Works pictured on the exhibition page include Sisyphos from 2002, Two Lemures from 2002, the Wegener Rooms from 1988, Larrey Rue from 1986, the Symbol of Sexuality from 1999 to 2000, and the Uncle Chair, made between 2003 and 2007\. There are posters too, like Judith and Ludwig from 2007, plus collaborations with friends such as Heimo Zobernig, Herbert Brandl and Otto Zitko.

## Franz West chairs and furniture

If you search for West, his furniture is what comes up first, and for good reason. The rebar and fabric chairs in our lead image, Small Essl from 1997 made with Zobernig, are a perfect example. They look rough, a bit homemade and very usable, which was the point. West blurred the line between sculpture, furniture and everyday stuff so thoroughly that sitting down became part of the work. Lenders for the show include the ESSL Collection and the Haselsteiner Family Collection at the Albertina itself, the Hall Art Foundation, the Luma Foundation and Sammlung Grässlin.

## Plan a visit

Franz West: The Revolution of Sculpture is on view at the [Albertina Modern](https://www.albertina.at/en/albertina-modern/?ref=unknowndivide.com) from November 6, 2026 to March 29, 2027\. Book through the [official ticket page](https://www.albertina.at/en/tickets/?ref=unknowndivide.com), and dig into the archive side of his career through the [Franz West Privatstiftung](https://www.franzwest.at/?ref=unknowndivide.com).

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. So much of what feels fresh in design and art right now, from wobbly collectible furniture to work you are invited to sit on, owes West a debt.
