Harley-Davidson first used Sprint in 1961 for a bike that, in the company's words, welcomed a new generation of riders. Sixty-five years later, the [Harley-Davidson Sprint 440](https://www.h-dmediakit.com/ca/news-articles/new-harley-davidson-sprint-440-motorcycle-is-an-invitation-to-joyride.html?ref=unknowndivide.com) was announced on November 2 as a low, narrow, single-cylinder cruiser for new riders, returning riders and anyone who wants something simpler under them. People are already searching for it, and it gets its public debut this week in Milan. ## Small engine, full Harley stance The design brief was clear: make it look like a Harley-Davidson, not a starter bike. Head of Design Bjorn Shuster says the fork rake, suspension height and wheel and tire sizes combine into a cruiser stance that is "pure Harley-Davidson." You get a suspended headlamp, a teardrop fuel tank, a bobbed rear fender and a fastback seat with room for a passenger. Small details get the same care, from machined highlights on the engine and the new 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels to the tapered muffler and a Harley logo set in the center of the headlamp. It comes in three colors: Dark Billiard Gray, Vivid Black and Teal Thunder. Each carries an orange slash graphic on the tank with a warped checkered center, and the side cover introduces a new character, the "Harley Hare," a nod to how quick and nimble the bike is meant to feel. Harley-Davidson notes that graphics may vary by market. ## What is under it The engine is a 440cc (26.9 cubic inch) air and oil cooled single with a single overhead camshaft and two valves. Harley-Davidson rates it at 27 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 28 pound feet of torque at 4,000 RPM, with a long piston stroke tuned for pull at low revs, which suits city traffic. A gear driven counterbalancer calms vibration, electronic fuel injection handles starts and throttle response, and a six-speed gearbox has overdrive in fifth and sixth for relaxed highway cruising. The company quotes up to 80 miles per gallon combined, from a 2.4 gallon tank. The numbers that matter most for a first bike are about size. The laden seat height is 26.4 inches, and ready to ride, the bike weighs 412 pounds. An assist and slip clutch lightens the lever pull. Up front are 43mm inverted forks with 5.1 inches of travel, with piggyback coil-over shocks at the rear that have seven-step preload adjustment. Braking is a 320mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc, with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard. A color thin film transistor (TFT) display sits in a classic 3.5 inch round housing, the lighting is all LED (light emitting diode), and there is a USB-C (Universal Serial Bus Type-C) charging port above the headlamp. Genuine Harley-Davidson accessories are ready from day one, including throw-over saddlebags, a sissy bar and backrest, Tallboy and Reach seats to fit taller or shorter riders, a Brawler solo seat, a Willie G Skull collection, a flatter Moto handlebar, an engine guard and a detachable windshield. ## Where and when The Sprint 440 makes its public debut at EICMA, the Esposizione internazionale del ciclo, motociclo, accessori motorcycle show in Milan, running November 5 to 8\.
