Montreal songwriter Helena Deland has announced her third solo album, [Eternity Shrugs](https://helenadeland.bandcamp.com/album/eternity-shrugs?ref=unknowndivide.com), due January 22, 2027 on Chivi Chivi. Alongside the news she has shared "Tip of My Tongue," a slow, shimmering song that feels like the warm center of the record, and the album is up for pre-order now.

## A song about running into someone

Deland describes "Tip of My Tongue" as being about a long awaited chance meeting, the kind that keeps part of your mind on alert for years. She says the arrangement was built around that sense of familiarity, something that has been waiting to be said for a long time. It lands as one of her most open songs yet: patient, glowing and quietly devastating in the way her best writing tends to be.

It follows September's "How Do You Like Me Now," which opens the album and imagines slipping away at a party toward a notebook that belongs to the host. That image of a private journal becomes a thread through the whole record, a stand in for songwriting itself, where private thoughts get made public and handed to strangers.

## Four seasons in rural Quebec

Eternity Shrugs follows the electronic density of 2020's Someone New and the grief shadowed folk of 2023's Goodnight Summerland. It was recorded in bursts over four seasons in rural Quebec and produced by Deland with longtime bandmates Francis Ledoux and Alexandre Larin, with Lysandre Ménard and Cédric Martel also in the room. Piano, bass, organ, Rhodes, viola and woodwinds gather around her voice and guitar, and the arrangements move between spare and subtly ornate.

Deland has said she pictures the album in shades of brown: wood, leather and smoke. "Great Dreams" reaches for 1960s style strings and a bass line with a nod to Lee Hazlewood, with fellow Montreal artist Cindy Lee appearing at the edge of the frame. "Where I Stand" was inspired by seeing Lucinda Williams at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and the closer "Here on the Page" circles back to the notebook from the opener.

## Tracklist and tour

The album runs 11 tracks, opening with "How Do You Like Me Now" and "My Wedding Cake" and closing with "Careful" and "Here on the Page." Deland, who has also worked with Men I Trust, JPEGMAFIA, Jonah Yano and claire rousay, plus her duo Hildegard with Ouri, will tour Europe, the UK and North America after release. Dates run from February 2027 in Berlin through April 2027 in Montréal, with stops in Paris, London, Los Angeles, New York and Toronto. ## Our call

This one is Surfacing. Deland has been one of Montreal's most quietly brilliant songwriters for years, and Eternity Shrugs sounds like the record that could finally widen the circle. Two songs in, it already feels like a late night album worth living with through the winter.
