Kali Malone has a new album out, and it was made somewhere few living composers ever get to play. [Burning Song](https://kalimalone.bandcamp.com/album/burning-song?ref=unknowndivide.com) arrived on October 30 through [Ideologic Organ](https://www.ideologic.org/release/soma078-kali-malone-burning-song?ref=unknowndivide.com), the label run by Stephen O'Malley, and it was recorded on the Bach Organ inside the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. That is the church where Johann Sebastian Bach spent the last 27 years of his life as cantor, and where he is buried beneath the sanctuary.

Heavy With Fruit by Kali Malone, the official video from her YouTube channel.

## A first for the Bach Organ

According to the label, Malone is the first musician to perform contemporary works on that instrument. The organ itself is not old. It was completed in 2000, but it was built with tuning and temperament systems drawn from baroque practice, which suits a composer who has spent years working in the small, shimmering spaces between standard pitches. On her records that detail is not academic. It is where the beating tones and slow blooms that make her music feel physical come from.

The sessions took place over two late nights in August 2025\. Engineer Francesco Donadello placed more than 20 microphones around the room and close to the instruments, so the church is part of the sound rather than a backdrop. Matt Colton mastered and cut the record at Metropolis in London in March 2026.

## The trio

Malone plays the organ, with Lucy Railton on cello and O'Malley on bowed acoustic guitar. It is the same trio that built her piece Does Spring Hide Its Joy, a group known for listening hard and moving together. Here the three of them step through long chord changes one at a time, sometimes hazy, sometimes rising into the bright upper register of the organ.

## A looser way of writing

This is her first album of new solo compositions since All Life Long in early 2024, and it marks a real change. She drops the canon form that shaped so much of her organ writing and lets each piece move in a straight line instead, with quiet bridging tones linking one track to the next. The label notes describe the process as more intuitive, and you can hear it. Nothing is stretched past the point where it feels finished.

The first half of the album began as a commission for the 2023 Venice Music Biennale, performed at San Pietro di Castello, with early ideas sketched on a piano backstage at Bozar in Brussels. The final three pieces were written in the month before the Leipzig session.

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. Malone has become one of the defining voices in slow, devotional drone, and putting new music into the same room as Bach is a statement without needing to say a word. Start with the [Heavy With Fruit video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUb%5FgmndgiY&ref=unknowndivide.com) and play it loud in a quiet room. If it pulls you in, our [ambient music starter guide](https://www.unknowndivide.com/ambient-music-starter-guide-essential-albums/) is the next step, and [our Kranky Records starter guide](https://www.unknowndivide.com/kranky-records-starter-guide-essential-albums/) covers more records that live in the same patient space.
