- Description: Kaweco created the Sport in 1911 as a pen small enough for a pocket. The Classic Sport keeps that idea alive, closing up short and growing to a normal writing length with the cap posted.

Most fountain pens live on a desk. The Kaweco Classic Sport was designed to live in your pocket. Closed, it is short enough to disappear in a jeans coin pocket or the spine of a notebook. Post the cap on the back and it becomes a full size pen that writes like a much bigger one. That clever trick is more than a century old, and it still makes the Sport one of the easiest ways to carry a fountain pen every day.

## Who makes it

The Sport is made by [Kaweco](https://www.kaweco-pen.com/en/?ref=unknowndivide.com), the German writing instrument brand. Kaweco says that in 1911 something remarkable by the name of Kaweco Sport was created, and the pen has been part of the brand's identity ever since. Today Kaweco states that all of its nibs, and the entire fountain pen, are made in Germany.

## What the Classic Sport is

The Classic is the original model in the Sport series. It is made from high quality plastic in what Kaweco calls historical colours. The wider Sport family also includes metal versions such as the AL Sport, Brass Sport and Steel Sport, but the Classic is the lightweight original.

The Navy version shown here uses a deep, saturated blue. Kaweco explains that the colour name comes from the dark blue uniforms of British Royal Navy officers in the 17th century. It is a quiet, serious shade that looks good in a shirt pocket or clipped to a leather notebook cover.

The design depends on posting. Capped, the pen is compact. When you push the cap onto the end of the barrel, Kaweco says it grows to a normal size of about 13 centimeters, which gives your hand enough length to write comfortably.

- Series: Kaweco Sport, Classic model
- Material: high quality plastic
- Length closed: 10.7 centimeters
- Length open: 12.7 centimeters
- Length posted: about 13 centimeters
- Diameter: 13 millimeters
- Weight: 10.7 grams
- Nibs: five sizes from extra fine (EF) to extra broad (BB)
- Origin: made in Germany

## Why it is cool

A pocket fountain pen solves the main problem with fountain pens: you rarely have one when you need it. Full size pens are a commitment to carry. The Sport is light, at about 10.7 grams, and small enough to forget about until you need to sign something or jot a note.

The nib choice matters too. Kaweco offers five sizes, from extra fine to extra broad. If you are unsure, the brand recommends a medium nib, a sensible middle ground for everyday notes. Fine nibs suit small handwriting and cheap paper, while the broad options show off ink color and shading.

It is also a great entry point. The Sport is simple, sturdy plastic and easy to clean, so it makes a forgiving first fountain pen. Kaweco also sells a Mini converter developed for the Sport, which lets you fill it from a bottle of ink like a syringe instead of using cartridges, plus clips in gold, silver, bronze and black if you want it to sit upright in a pocket.

Finally, there is the design itself. The Sport looks the same today as a pen designed generations ago, and that is part of its appeal. It does not chase trends, which means it never looks dated.

## Who should buy it

Buy the Classic Sport if you want a fountain pen you will actually carry, if you are new to fountain pens and want a low risk start, or if you keep a pocket notebook and want a pen that matches its size. It also makes a thoughtful gift for students and journal writers.

Skip it if you have large hands and dislike posting a cap, or if you want a heavy metal pen with real weight. The Sport is about portability first. The metal Sport models in the same family are the better pick for people who want more heft.
