Plenty of synths promise to be approachable, and plenty promise depth. The Korg minilogue xd is one of the few that manages both. It is a compact four voice analog polysynth with a knob for nearly everything, and Korg has built a digital engine, effects and a powerful sequencer around that analog core. For someone moving from software instruments to hardware, or for a producer who wants one keyboard that can play chords, basses and strange textures, it is a very strong pick.

## What it is

Korg describes the minilogue xd on [its official product page](https://www.korg.com/us/products/synthesizers/minilogue%5Fxd/?ref=unknowndivide.com) as an evolved, next generation analog synthesizer. It builds on the original minilogue, which Korg says made analog synthesis approachable, and adds a digital multi engine, effects, a powered up sequencer and micro tuning.

The voice structure Korg lists is two voltage controlled oscillators (VCO) plus the multi engine, one voltage controlled filter (VCF), two envelope generators (EG), one voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) and one low frequency oscillator (LFO). Put simply, each of the four voices has two analog oscillators, a digital third oscillator, a filter to shape tone, envelopes to shape how notes start and fade, and a modulation source to add movement.

## Key specs

- **Polyphony:** four voice analog
- **Filter:** sharp two pole filter with a drive switch
- **Oscillator tricks:** wave shaping, a sync and ring switch, and cross modulation
- **Multi engine:** noise generator, Variable Phase Modulation (VPM) oscillator and user oscillator slots
- **Effects:** modulation, reverb and delay, usable at the same time, running on 32 bit floating point digital signal processing (DSP)
- **Memory:** 200 presets loaded, 500 program locations
- **Sequencer:** 16 step polyphonic sequencer with motion sequencing for up to four knobs
- **Tuning:** micro tuning with 23 preset tunings
- **Display:** organic EL display with an oscilloscope
- **Connections:** stereo output, damper pedal jack and two control voltage (CV) inputs

## The analog side

The minilogue circuitry has been developed further for the xd, and Korg says every parameter was tuned around what musicians want. The range it describes runs from warm pads to fat basses and crisp leads. The drive switch pushes more signal into the filter for a thicker sound, while cross modulation and ring modulation bring out harder, more metallic tones when you want them.

Four voice polyphony is the key number here. It means you can play four note chords, which covers most pads and progressions, while still having the option to stack all four voices on a single note for a huge mono sound. If you are not sure which approach suits your music, our guide to [monophonic vs polyphonic synths](https://www.unknowndivide.com/monophonic-vs-polyphonic-synths-explained/) walks through the difference.

## The digital multi engine

The multi engine works as a third oscillator alongside the two analog ones. It offers four types of noise for percussion and effects, a two operator VPM and frequency modulation (FM) oscillator with 16 types for sharp, metallic sounds, and 16 user slots for oscillators you create or download. Korg also includes a morphing wavetable oscillator as a preset. Using the open software development kit (SDK), people can write their own oscillators and effects and load them through Korg's librarian software. That gives the xd a life well beyond its factory sounds.

## Voice modes and performance

Korg picked four voice modes for the xd:

- **Poly:** a standard four voice polyphonic synth; turning the voice mode knob moves into a duo mode with deeper detune
- **Unison:** all four voices on one note as a monophonic synth, with adjustable detune
- **Chord:** one key plays a chord using one to four voices
- **Arp and Latch:** an arpeggiator with up to four voices, plus a latch switch

A joystick handles pitch bend and modulation, and you can assign another parameter to its up and down axis. The 16 step sequencer records in real time or step by step, and motion sequencing captures the movement of up to four knobs, so a single program can turn into an evolving part or even a drum pattern. The micro tuning feature, carried over from the monologue, lets you retune each key, and the presets include tunings made by Dorian Concept and Taylor McFerrin.

## How it compares

Next to its smaller sibling, the [Korg monologue](https://www.korg.com/us/products/synthesizers/monologue/?ref=unknowndivide.com), the xd trades single voice focus and battery power for chords, effects and a digital engine. Against a digital hybrid like the [Arturia MicroFreak](https://www.unknowndivide.com/arturia-microfreak-hybrid-synthesizer/), the main draw of the xd is that its four voices are truly analog, with digital sound kept as an extra layer rather than the core. If you want to see where the xd sits among other first keyboards, our list of the [best synthesizers for beginners](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-synthesizers-for-beginners/) covers the alternatives, and our [Minimoog Model D explainer](https://www.unknowndivide.com/minimoog-model-d-explained/) shows the classic layout these knob per function designs grew from.

## Who it suits

The minilogue xd suits producers who want analog chords without a huge instrument, sound designers who like the idea of loading custom oscillators, and live players who value a sequencer and effects built into one box. If you already have a full keyboard controller, Korg also makes a minilogue xd module with the same engine and no keys. Either way, it is a synth that is easy to start with and slow to outgrow.
