[LAIKA](https://www.laika.com/our-films/wildwood?ref=unknowndivide.com) calls it the largest, most ambitious and most technically sophisticated film in its history, and this morning the studio introduced its heroine, Prue McKeel, as the newest member of a family that started with Coraline. Tickets are on sale now through the [official Wildwood site](https://wildwoodmovie.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com). Travis Knight, LAIKA's president and chief executive, directed it. The story comes from the bestselling novel by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists, with illustrations by Carson Ellis. If you grew up on Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls or Kubo and the Two Strings, this is the same studio and the same handmade approach, built frame by frame with puppets and real sets instead of generated on a computer. ## The story Prue McKeel, voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, is a headstrong teenager whose baby brother Mac is carried off by a murder of crows. She follows them into the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted forest hidden just beyond Portland, Oregon, with her loyal classmate Curtis Mehlberg, voiced by Jacob Tremblay. Inside she finds talking animals, bandits, and powerful figures driven by grief and ambition, all drawn into a conflict that threatens the balance of the forest itself. The woods are split into factions. The Mystics of North Wood keep watch over the ancient Council Tree. South Wood is the busy town center, run from Pittock Mansion. Brendan the Bandit King leads the outlaws, Owl Rex is the crown prince of the Avian Principality, and deep underground the Dowager Governess Alexandra, once a kind ruler and now lost in grief, commands an army of coyotes. Our header image shows Prue riding The General, the eagle warrior and leader of the skies voiced by Angela Bassett. ## The voice cast LAIKA's full voice cast list: Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant. The film is rated PG-13 (parents strongly cautioned). Wildwood, final trailer. The studio's behind-the-scenes featurettes on its [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@LAIKAStudios?ref=unknowndivide.com) show the Council Tree built from wood, wire, fabric and paint, a bandit camp with its own inhabitants, and the Coyote Warren, a maze of tunnels and chambers under the forest. Every puppet is moved by hand, one frame at a time. ## Our call This one is Surfacing. Stop-motion features this big are rare, and LAIKA does not make many of them, so this is the week to see it on the biggest screen near you.
