Full size multi-tools are brilliant, but many people leave them at home because they are heavy. The Leatherman Skeletool is the answer to that problem. It keeps only the tools most people actually use and cuts the weight to 5 ounces, which makes it far more likely to be with you when something needs fixing.

## Who makes it

The Skeletool is made by [Leatherman](https://www.leatherman.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) in Portland, Oregon. The company story begins with Tim Leatherman, who got the idea for a pocket survival tool during a trip through Europe in 1975\. The first Pocket Survival Tool order, 500 tools, came in 1983, and the brand has made multi-tools ever since.

## What the Skeletool is

The Skeletool is a lightweight multi-tool with seven tools. It opens like a pair of pliers and gives you needlenose pliers, regular pliers, hard wire cutters and wire cutters. On the outside sits a 2.6 inch combo knife made from 420HC stainless steel, partly serrated, that locks open.

The handle doubles as a large bit driver, and spare bits store inside the handle itself. Leatherman includes Phillips number 1 and number 2 bits plus 1/4 inch and 3/16 inch screwdriver bits. A carabiner and bottle opener round out the list, and the pocket clip is removable.

Closed, it measures 4 inches long, 1.24 inches wide and 0.52 inches thick. Open, it stretches to 6 inches. A sheath is sold separately, and Leatherman covers it with a 25 year warranty.

## Why it is cool

The Skeletool is built around a smart idea: carry the tools you use, not the ones you might. Pliers, a blade and a driver cover most everyday fixes, from tightening a loose screw to cutting zip ties.

The open frame keeps weight down and gives it a distinctive look. It feels more like a piece of gear than a brick in your pocket.

The bit system is a quiet advantage. Swappable bits mean you are not limited to fixed screwdrivers, and storing them in the handle keeps everything together.

## Who should buy it

Buy the Skeletool if you want a multi-tool you will actually carry every day, especially for light repairs, bike fixes and travel.

If you need scissors, saws or files, step up to a fuller tool. The Skeletool trades breadth for lightness. Check local knife laws before carrying any tool with a locking blade.

## Living with it

The first week tells you more than the product page. Pay attention to whether you reach for it without negotiating with yourself, whether it creates new friction and whether it still feels like the right size for your actual day. Good gear disappears into routine. Average gear keeps asking for attention.

Also give the setup a fair chance. Charge it, break it in, remap it or condition it before deciding it is wrong. Many of the best everyday objects feel slightly awkward on day one and obvious by week three. That adjustment period is part of owning something built for repeated use rather than a one-time unboxing.

If you already own a cheaper version of the same idea, do not run both forever. Use the better one for a month and store the old one. The comparison becomes honest only when the new object has to carry the whole job.

The practical test is simple. If you reach for the thing without thinking, and if it still feels right after ordinary weeks of use, it belongs in the small group of tools worth keeping. That is the standard behind this recommendation.
