Norman Foster has spent six decades designing airports, towers and domes. At 91, he has finally designed a watch. The [Lebond Norman Foster](https://www.lebondwatches.com/journal/lebond-norman-foster-natural-titanium/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the architect's first timepiece, created with the Design & Innovation Unit of the [Norman Foster Foundation](https://www.normanfosterfoundation.org/?ref=unknowndivide.com) and built by Lebond, which makes Swiss made mechanical watches and has already worked with Pritzker winners Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura. Foster won his own Pritzker in 1999, and this watch feels like one of his buildings shrunk to wrist size.

## A case with no lugs

The big idea is what is missing. Conventional lugs are gone. Instead of a strap hanging off two projecting horns, the strap flows straight out of the case and wraps around the wrist, so case and strap read as one uninterrupted object. Lebond compares it to the way structure and skin become one in a Foster building, and on the wrist the effect is clean and low.

The numbers back that up. The grade 5 titanium case is 38.5mm across, 40mm where it meets the strap, and just 10mm thick, with 50 metres of water resistance. Each case is individually numbered. A domed sapphire crystal sits on the front and a flat sapphire caseback on the back, both with anti-reflective coating, and the 18mm FKM rubber strap is interchangeable within the integrated system and closes with a titanium deployant clasp.

## Built for a pilot

Foster is a pilot, and decades of travel made a second time zone essential. So the watch gets a bidirectional rotating 12-hour bezel for reading a second zone at a glance, a proper tool watch function hidden inside a very calm design. There is a date window at 3 o'clock and white Super-LumiNova with blue lume on the markers and hands.

Inside is the Swiss automatic ETA 2892-A2, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with 21 jewels and around 50 hours of power reserve. Flip it over and you see the best detail: a custom rotor with five precision-machined perforations, turning behind the sapphire back. In Foster's words on the Lebond site, engineering can also be beautiful when the way something works is made visible.

## Two editions

The [Natural Titanium Edition](https://www.lebondwatches.com/shop/lebond-norman-foster-natural-titanium-edition/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the light one. Its case mixes micro-sandblasted, polished and brushed finishes with an anti-fingerprint coating, the sunray-brushed dial shifts from silver to grey as the wrist turns, the polished hands catch the light and the strap is a soft light grey. The rotor is vivid blue. Lebond ties the palette directly to Foster's architecture, the aluminium skin of the Sainsbury Centre and the glass dome of the Reichstag.

The [Black Edition](https://www.lebondwatches.com/shop/lebond-norman-foster-black-edition/?ref=unknowndivide.com) goes the other way. The titanium is finished in matte black DLC, the dial and hands are lacquered matte black and the strap is black rubber, a monochrome tool watch look inspired by aviation instruments. Its rotor is vivid red, the one hit of colour in an otherwise stealthy watch.

Foster has said he hopes it feels timeless rather than fashionable. The full [design concept](https://www.lebondwatches.com/design-concept-norman-foster/?ref=unknowndivide.com) lays out the thinking, and royalties from sales of the watch go to the educational programmes of the Norman Foster Institute.

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. A first watch from one of the most influential architects alive, with real tool watch credentials and a design that solves the lug problem in its own way, is not something that comes around often.
