[Marika Hackman](https://marikahackman.bandcamp.com/album/false-dogs?ref=unknowndivide.com) is back. The British songwriter just announced *False Dogs*, her fifth album, and shared its opening track "33" with a new video. The record arrives February 19, 2027 on Chrysalis, and this time Hackman is not only the writer and the player but the producer too. If *Big Sigh* was her heavy, sprawling statement, the early word from her camp suggests something more intimate: almost entirely acoustic, recorded close, and full of other voices talking back to her.

## A record she built herself

Hackman has played almost every instrument across her catalogue, and on *False Dogs* she took the next step and produced the whole thing. The official album notes say she developed her own production style through hours of playful experimentation at her East London studio, armed with a small jazz kit, a few select microphones and an odd instrument collection gathered over twenty years of making music. Her reference point was the dry realism and rawness of early 2000s radio.

The sound is built almost entirely from acoustic instruments. Drums sit right up front, holding together syncopated mandolins, an earthy sub harmonium, urgent pianos and layered strings that Hackman arranged herself. The production was finished at Big Jelly Studios in Ramsgate, a converted chapel, with previous collaborator Charlie Andrew and Polly Mackey, who records as Art School Girlfriend. They folded in field recordings of the Kent shoreline, fireworks and church bells. David Wrench, whose credits include The xx, Frank Ocean and Caribou, mixed it.

## "33" and the voices that talk back

"33" is short and sharp, about two and a half minutes, and it opens the album with a twist: a children's choir that personifies nostalgic fear. The album notes frame the record around the milestones that stack up as you get older, with songs about grief, the passage of time and a growing gratitude for feeling safe, all cut with hope in chaotic times.

Other characters show up later. On "Half Painted Dog," a reassuring choir answers a love letter she wrote to her pet. "Hello Sunshine" is described as her most directly personal song yet, an ode to her grandmother set over strummed guitar and closely recorded bowed strings. The album closes on "Crimson," which the notes call a final landing place full of small vignettes of everyday beauty.

The full tracklist runs 12 songs: "33," "Close To Me," "I'm Good," "Handsome," "The Blows," "Be Surprised," "Everything You Wanted," "Ha\_Happy," "Half Painted Dog," "Hello Sunshine," "Lying Down" and "Crimson."
