## The three dates that matter

Publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward have locked in a three step rollout. Campaign Early Access opened Friday, October 16\. DMZ Early Access follows on Tuesday, October 20\. The full game, Multiplayer included, arrives Friday, October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC, and Nintendo Switch 2\. Activision's [official editions guide](https://support.activision.com/modern-warfare-4/articles/modern-warfare-4-editions?ref=unknowndivide.com) pins both early access start dates to Pacific time, and actual play time can vary by time zone.

## How Campaign Early Access works

Preorder or prepurchase any digital edition, Standard or Vault, and the full Campaign unlocks now, according to the [Call of Duty blog](https://www.callofduty.com/blog/2026/10/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-campaign-early-access-live-now?ref=unknowndivide.com). That covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2, and access runs right up to launch day. Physical editions carry the base game only, so early access is a digital perk.

The Campaign is sixteen missions across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai. You play as Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, while an operator-turned-outlaw Captain Price works outside the system on a hunt for whoever is pulling the strings. Finishing missions unlocks rewards that carry into Multiplayer and DMZ at launch, including new base Operators and Double XP Tokens, so the players clearing the story this week walk into day one ahead.

DMZ is the extraction mode. You drop in solo or with a squad as an off-the-books asset in a shifting conflict zone, loot advanced military tech, and try to get out with whatever you can carry. Its early access window opens October 20 for the same digital preorders.

## Standard or Vault Edition

Every digital preorder gets Campaign and DMZ Early Access, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and Gilded Pearl Camo Pack for Black Ops 7 and Warzone, and the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint for MW4 at launch. On Xbox Series X|S that blueprint gets a translucent OG Green finish to celebrate 25 years of Xbox.

The digital-only Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix), the Special Forces Operator Pack with operators from France, Germany, South Korea and the United Kingdom, a five weapon Signature Weapon Collection, one season of the BlackCell Battle Pass, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus with an extra Active Duty slot. Until launch there is also a loyalty discount on the Vault Edition for eligible past players who own and have played a qualifying Call of Duty from Modern Warfare (2019) onward on the same platform account. The physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions cannot be upgraded to Vault later.

## Which platform to buy on

MW4 is current generation only. The [official announcement](https://www.callofduty.com/blog/2026/05/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-announcement?ref=unknowndivide.com) confirms it will not be on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. On Xbox, the [Xbox listing](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4?ref=unknowndivide.com) supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers console and PC. Do not wait on Game Pass either: Activision says MW4 launches as a [standalone release](https://www.callofduty.com/blog/2026/10/call-of-duty-intel-modern-warfare-4-launch-xbox-game-pass?ref=unknowndivide.com) and will not join Game Pass until Holiday 2027.

PlayStation players can preorder from the [PS5 game page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4/?ref=unknowndivide.com) (the [PlayStation Blog](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/05/28/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-campaign-multiplayer-and-dmz-launches-october-23/?ref=unknowndivide.com) covers all three modes). PC players can choose [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4435490/Call%5Fof%5FDuty%5FModern%5FWarfare%5F4/?ref=unknowndivide.com), Battle.net or Xbox on PC, with TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot required. Switch 2 owners get the first Modern Warfare on a Nintendo system in more than a decade, built natively for the hardware, with the Vault Edition on the [Nintendo store](https://www.nintendo.com/US/store/products/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-vault-edition-switch-2?ref=unknowndivide.com).

One last check before you buy: Multiplayer and DMZ need a constant internet connection, and online modes on console require PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online.
