Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher is quiet and devastating, funny and strange, and it ends with a closing song that builds into something enormous. If you have heard "Kyoto" or "Garden Song" and never sat with the whole thing, it is worth owning, and vinyl is a great way to hear it. Here is what Punisher is, who made it and where to buy a copy.

## What it is

[Punisher](https://deadoceans.com/releases/punisher/?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the second solo album from [Phoebe Bridgers](https://phoebebridgers.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com), and her fourth release overall. It was released on June 18, 2020, by [Dead Oceans](https://deadoceans.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com), and runs 11 tracks, ending with the closer, "I Know The End."

The track list includes "Garden Song," "Kyoto," the title track "Punisher," "Halloween," "Chinese Satellite," "Moon Song," "Savior Complex" and "Graceland Too."

## What it is about

Dead Oceans puts it neatly: Bridgers does not write love songs so much as songs about the impact love has on our lives, personalities and priorities. Punisher lives in that space. Calling it a heartbreak album undersells it, and calling it sad ignores how much strange joy runs through it.

That tension is the heart of the record. Bridgers is known for a deadpan, self aware sense of humor, and the label describes her talent as bringing fierce curiosity to slimy and painful things, interrogating them until they give up answers that are beautiful and absurd, or reporting honestly when they are neither. The result is an album that can make you laugh and wreck you within the same verse.

## Who made it

Bridgers gathered a remarkable cast. Guests include Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, Christian Lee Hutson, Conor Oberst, Nathaniel Walcott of Bright Eyes, Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jenny Lee Lindberg of Warpaint, Blake Mills and Jim Keltner.

Her longtime band anchors it all: Marshall Vore on drums, Harrison Whitford on guitar, Emily Retsas on bass and Nick White on keys. The album was mixed by Mike Mogis, who also mixed her debut, Stranger In The Alps.

## The closer

If one song defines Punisher, it is "I Know The End." It starts small and builds into what the label calls a sumptuous doomsday swirl of wails and horns, drums and electric guitar, ending with Bridgers' own final whispered roar. Dead Oceans calls it Punisher in a nutshell: devastating elegance punctuated by a moment of deeply campy self awareness. Hearing it at the end of a full side is a big reason to own this record on vinyl.

## Why it is cool

Punisher feels intimate in a way few albums manage. The arrangements are spare when they need to be and huge when they need to be, and Bridgers' voice sits close, as if she is singing in the same room. Songs like "Kyoto" are bright and catchy, while "Garden Song" and "Moon Song" are hushed and haunting. It is a record you can play front to back and find something new in each time.

It is also a gateway. If it clicks, the guest list alone points you toward a lot of great listening, from Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to Conor Oberst and the wider Dead Oceans roster.

## How to listen

Punisher is built as a whole. The quiet songs set up the loud ones, and the slow climb of the closer only hits as hard as it does after everything before it. So the best way to hear it is the old fashioned way: put the record on, sit down and let it play through without skipping. A decent turntable and a pair of speakers or headphones will bring out the small details, from the hushed vocals to the horns at the end. New to vinyl?
