Start planning the trip now. The [Denver Art Museum](https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en?ref=unknowndivide.com) has announced [Picasso: Magician](https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/press/release/denver-art-museum-presents-picasso-magician-oct.-2027?ref=unknowndivide.com), a U.S. exclusive exhibition built with the [Musée national Picasso-Paris](https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en?ref=unknowndivide.com). Denver is the only American venue, and the show opens October 31, 2027, running through February 28, 2028 in the museum's Hamilton Building.

A year out sounds early. For a Picasso survey of this size, it is not.

## What is in the show

Picasso: Magician follows seven decades of one obsession: the human figure. The museum says the exhibition will unfold across seven sections and bring together 150 works, about 130 by Picasso himself and 20 by other artists. Every medium he worked in is on the list, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and ceramics.

The arc runs through the full career. The museum points to the lyricism of the Blue Period, the radical stylization of Cubism, the neoclassical confidence of the interwar years, and the expressive force of the surrealist and late work. That spread matters. Plenty of Picasso shows pick one chapter. This one is designed to show how often he reinvented the same subject, and how far he was willing to push it.

It is also a first for the city. The museum calls it Denver's first comprehensive exhibition of the artist, which makes the U.S. exclusive tag land even harder.

## The image that sets the tone

The announcement leads with Self-Portrait from 1901, an oil on canvas from the Paris museum's collection. Look at it for a second: the dark buttoned coat, the pale face, the red beard and the cool blue ground. It is a smart opening image for a show about the figure. Before every later reinvention, there was a young painter looking straight back at himself.

Christoph Heinrich, the Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the Denver Art Museum, put the title in plain terms: "Pablo Picasso was just like a magician, with unlimited thinking and the ability to transform reality into new creative forms full of humanity, mystery and emotion."

## Why this one matters

Partnering directly with the Musée national Picasso-Paris is the key detail. Working with the Paris museum is what gives a single-venue show this kind of reach, and it is why Denver gets to make the U.S. exclusive claim at all. Adding 20 works by other artists also suggests the curators want to place Picasso in conversation rather than on a pedestal, which tends to make for a sharper visit.

For anyone mapping out 2027, this sits neatly beside the big museum moments we track. Our look at the [Marcel Duchamp retrospective in Philadelphia](https://www.unknowndivide.com/marcel-duchamp-retrospective-philadelphia/) covers another giant of modern art getting the full survey treatment, and our [Art Basel Paris guide](https://www.unknowndivide.com/art-basel-paris-2026-grand-palais/) shows how the Paris art calendar keeps feeding the wider world.

## Plan ahead

The announcement does not include ticket details yet. Watch the museum's [exhibitions page](https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/exhibitions?ref=unknowndivide.com) for timed entry and member previews as opening gets closer, since surveys at this scale tend to book up early.

## Our call

This one is Surfacing. A U.S. exclusive, a Paris partner with deep holdings, 150 works and a clear idea at the center. It is a long wait, but this is the kind of exhibition people plan a trip around.
