A good commuter bag has two jobs. It needs to protect a laptop and a day's worth of things from the weather, and it needs to look right when you walk into an office, a cafe or a dinner. The Rains Backpack handles both with very little fuss. It is a simple, squared rucksack made from waterproof coated fabric, and its minimal look has made it a familiar sight on bike lanes and train platforms.

## Who makes it

The Backpack comes from [Rains](https://www.rains.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com), the Danish brand behind a wide range of waterproof outerwear and bags. Rains processes its orders from its headquarters in Denmark, and its design language carries the clean lines of that region: few seams, no logos shouting for attention and a focus on materials that cope with wet weather.

## What the Rains Backpack is

Rains describes the Backpack as clean and ever contemporary. The silhouette is defined by its squared shape and a flap that closes with magnet snap fastenings, so you can open and close it with one hand without fiddling with buckles.

Inside there is a single spacious main compartment and an internal laptop pocket. Rains says the laptop pocket fits a 15 inch laptop in a sleeve, which makes the bag ready for a work day. There is also an internal zip pocket for small items, and a concealed external pocket on the back panel for a phone, where it sits against your back and away from wandering hands.

The bag is cut from Rains' signature PU fabric, a polyester base with a polyurethane (PU) coating. The brand says the fabric is engineered for carrying strength, wear resistance and a smooth feel, and rates it with a water column pressure of 8,000 millimeters, a lab measure of how much water pressure a fabric resists before it leaks.

- Capacity: 18 liters
- Dimensions: 50 by 30 by 12 centimeters (height, width, depth)
- Fabric: signature waterproof PU fabric on a 100 percent polyester base
- Water column pressure: 8,000 millimeters
- Closure: flap with magnet snap fastenings
- Pockets: main compartment, laptop pocket, internal zip pocket, concealed back pocket
- Carry: adjustable shoulder straps and a webbing carry handle

## Why it is cool

The design is the first draw. Most technical bags look technical, covered in straps, zippers and logos. The Rains Backpack looks more like a piece of furniture than a piece of hiking gear. That squared shape and smooth finish fit equally well with a raincoat, a suit or a hoodie.

The waterproof fabric is the second. If you commute by bike or on foot, a sudden shower is not a crisis. The coated fabric sheds water, and the flap covers the opening so rain does not run straight into the main compartment. Mud and grime wipe off rather than soaking in.

The details are well judged. The magnet flap is quick to use at a crosswalk or a bike rack. The back phone pocket keeps your most used item easy to reach but hidden. And the laptop pocket turns a stylish bag into a practical work bag without adding bulk.

If 18 liters is more than you need, Rains also makes a Backpack Mini at 12.5 liters, 44 by 29 by 10 centimeters, with the same look in a slimmer size.

## Who should buy it

Buy the Rains Backpack if you commute by bike, foot or transit, if you live somewhere with frequent rain, or if you want a work bag that looks clean and modern. It also suits students who carry a laptop and a few books.

Look elsewhere if you need a lot of organization, a padded hip belt for heavy loads or a bag for long hikes. The single compartment is simple by design, so small items are best kept in a pouch. Care is easy but specific: Rains advises against tumble drying, dry cleaning or bleach.
