RM, the stage name of BTS leader Kim Namjoon, just turned a museum floor into a mixtape. (RM started out as short for Rap Monster; he dropped that in 2017, and these days he says it can stand for Real Me.) [RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me](https://www.sfmoma.org/exhibition/rm-x-sfmoma/?ref=unknowndivide.com) opened to the public on Saturday, October 3, and it is the first museum exhibition ever built from the personal art collection of the BTS leader. He did not just lend the work. He curated it, wrote the wall texts by hand, narrated the audio guide and picked the music that plays in the galleries.

And the fan response was instant. The exhibition merch dropped online, took thousands of orders in the first few hours, and the SFMOMA Museum Store [paused online preorders](https://museumstore.sfmoma.org/blogs/news/rm-x-sfmoma?ref=unknowndivide.com) to catch up. That is not normal museum gift shop energy.

## What is on the walls

The show fills Floor 7 at SFMOMA with close to 200 works, roughly three quarters of them from RM's own collection and the rest from the museum. The center of gravity is modern and contemporary Korean art, with names like Kim Whanki, Yun Hyong-keun, Chang Ucchin, Park Rehyun, Kwon Okyon, To Sangbong and Kim Yun Shin, and SFMOMA says many of RM's pieces have never been exhibited in the US before.

The fun part is the pairings. Korean works hang next to pieces by Yves Klein, Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Nam June Paik, Giorgio Morandi and Wayne Thiebaud. Yun Hyong-keun, one of RM's favorite artists, gets his own gallery with sixteen works. One of the best stories in the room: Yun met Donald Judd in 1991 and Judd went on to champion his work, so the curators put Yun's *Burnt Umber & Ultramarine* (2001) right alongside a Judd from 1964.

The sections read like a tracklist too. Bluewater, Friendscape, Home and, our favorite, I Don't Know But I Like It, a room for art that refuses to fit a category. You can dig deeper in SFMOMA's own [exhibition guide](https://www.sfmoma.org/read/rm-x-sfmoma-a-private-collection-of-korean-art-revealed/?ref=unknowndivide.com).

## RM in his own words, literally

This is not a celebrity name on a door. SFMOMA says RM shaped the questions behind the show, the selection and the art direction, working with co-curators América Castillo and Hyoeun Kim on a project that started two years ago. His handwriting is on the walls, his voice is in the English and Korean audio guide, and his in-gallery playlist is the soundtrack.

"My only hope is that this exhibition can be a small but sturdy bridge for many," RM said in the museum's [official announcement](https://www.sfmoma.org/press-release/rm-and-sfmoma-partner-on-first-exhibition-of-its-kind/?ref=unknowndivide.com). On the exhibition page he puts it even simpler: "I just hope for it to be really personal."

For anyone who has followed his solo records, from *Indigo* to *Right Place, Wrong Person*, the link between the music and the collecting makes sense. SFMOMA traces the collection back to museum visits he made while on tour with [BTS](https://ibighit.com/en/bts/?ref=unknowndivide.com). Now the tour stops are on his walls. It is the same move we loved in the [Barrie x Damien Hirst](https://www.unknowndivide.com/barrie-damien-hirst-cashmere-collection/) drop: when the art world and the fan world collide, both sides get louder.

## The merch, and why it vanished

The RM x SFMOMA collection was designed just for the show, drawing on the exhibition graphics and RM's handwritten reflections. The online lineup included three hats at $45, a canvas tote at $65, a hoodie at $155, a sweatshirt at $115 and a $20 zine, with ceramics, posters, journals and notebooks in the wider range. Online preorders are paused with no reopen date, and international shipping is not available. The full collection is in person only at the SFMOMA Museum Store, which says it will restock through the run, though styles may sell out between deliveries.

## How to get in

It is a timed ticket show with a surcharge of $10 on weekdays and $12 on weekends and holidays, free for members and visitors 18 and under. SFMOMA says weekday tickets are widely available from October 5 onward, as are weekends except the first few Saturdays. Superfans can grab the $75 [Encore Pass](https://www.sfmoma.org/visit/encore-pass/?ref=unknowndivide.com) for unlimited visits through the run, an exclusive gift picked up on site and 10% off at the exhibition pop-up store. Check the [ticket FAQ](https://www.sfmoma.org/visit/rm-x-sfmoma-between-you-and-me-faq/?ref=unknowndivide.com) before you go.

RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me runs through February 7, 2027, and SFMOMA says it is the only US presentation. Right after our [Bowie80](https://www.unknowndivide.com/bowie80-david-bowie-80th-birthday/) tribute, it is a good reminder that the most interesting musicians never stay in one lane. If you are in San Francisco, go. If you are not, start planning, and maybe grab the [Boards of Canada tribute book](https://www.unknowndivide.com/boards-of-canada-tribute-book/) while you wait.
