Some lights look like they were glazed in a kiln. The pieces in Rollo Studio's [U Collection](https://www.rollostudio.com/u-collection?ref=unknowndivide.com) look exactly like that, all fat curves and glossy tile with grout lines running across them, but they were never fired. They were 3D printed, one tile at a time, in a studio in Valencia. The studio calls it a new direction, and it is one of the most charming lighting collections we have seen this year.

## Soft forms with a spine

Rollo Studio describes the U Collection as a family of lighting and objects built around soft, rounded, generous forms that feel almost alive, with a designer's discipline holding them together underneath. That is a fair description. The table lamps look like a chunky letter or a piece of bent pipe, the pendants hang like puffy capsules, and the light leaks out through slits and openings in the shapes. They are playful at first glance, then you notice how carefully the joints and seams line up.

There are nine pieces in all. Three pendants, the [U·039](https://www.rollostudio.com/u-collection/u-039?ref=unknowndivide.com), U·044 and U·048, hang over tables and islands. Two table lamps, U·016 and U·018, sit on desks and side tables. Then come two ambient lamps, U·021 and U·037, plus the U·013 wall light, and the U·001 is a side table rather than a light at all.

## How they are made

The craft is the reason to care. Each piece is printed tile by tile in plant-based PLA. Every part is sanded and filled by hand, then painted professionally in your chosen colour with a thick, high-gloss clear coat on top. Back in Valencia the parts are joined, the light is fitted, and the grout lines are filled with real grout, left visible on purpose.

That last detail is what makes them work. The grout turns a printed shell into something that reads as tiled architecture, like a piece of a bathhouse or a metro station shrunk down to fit on a nightstand. It is a smart way to make digital fabrication feel warm and handmade.

## Any colour you like

The [colour range](https://www.rollostudio.com/colour?ref=unknowndivide.com) is huge. There are 35 curated colours across seven families, from chalky whites and raw earth tones to deep reds, moss greens and dusky shades. If none of those suit, the studio will paint any RAL Classic or RAL Design code at no extra cost, with custom matches confirmed by email. Every piece comes in every colour, so you can match a lamp to a wall, a sofa or a favourite mug.

## The light itself

Each piece has an integrated LED in a warm 2000K or 2700K, rated from 3 to 12 W depending on the piece, and all of them are dimmable. Everything is made to order and takes four to six weeks. The collection is designed and made by Rollo Bryant in Valencia, and you can browse each piece in its colours on the [U Collection page](https://www.rollostudio.com/u-collection?ref=unknowndivide.com) or see them styled in rooms in the [studio gallery](https://www.rollostudio.com/gallery?ref=unknowndivide.com).

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. A lot of 3D printed furniture still looks like a tech demo. Rollo Studio takes the opposite path, using the printer as one tool among many and finishing everything by hand until it feels like ceramic tile and old public buildings.
