Vertical turntables aren't new, whatever the marketing implies. Sharp built one into a boombox in the 1980s. Pro-Ject sells the [VT-E](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MA37IOJ?tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com). Miniot's Wheel 3 already does wall, stand, or tabletop. What Ruka Studio, a Los Angeles outfit founded by former Apple engineers, is actually selling with the TD-1 isn't the idea, it's the execution: machined aluminum instead of plastic, mechanical knobs instead of an app, a magnetic clamp that seats the record in one motion, and a belt-drive motor decoupled from the platter to kill vibration. The real engineering claim is auto-calibrated tracking force, since a stylus riding a vertical record needs the same correct pressure a flat one gets from gravity for free; enter your cartridge's spec and the TD-1 sets and holds it automatically. The spec sheet backs it up on paper: under 0.15% RMS wow and flutter, ±0.1% speed accuracy, 75dB-plus signal-to-noise, and swappable headshells for whatever cartridge you already own.

Worth being clear-eyed about the timeline before getting swept up in the renders: this is a pre-order for a first-time hardware studio's debut product, with the first run of 500 shipping in 2027, not next month. The founder price is the best it will ever be; reserve-only spots without paying in full pay the higher price later. That's a real wait and a genuine bet on a young studio's first hardware, which makes total sense if the design and the calibration claim hold up in practice as well as they do on paper, and there's real reason to think they will: this is the same team that came up through Apple's hardware discipline, applied to a category that's mostly been coasting on nostalgia.
