Few labels are as tied to one place as Saddle Creek is to Omaha. It began as a tight circle of Nebraska friends and bands, then became a home for songwriters from across the country while keeping its roots in the city. This guide walks through eight albums, from the label's early Omaha records to its newer signings, so you can hear how it has changed and what has stayed the same.

Here is a short history of Saddle Creek and eight records that make a strong first listen.

## A short history of Saddle Creek

The [label's about page](https://saddle-creek.com/pages/about?ref=unknowndivide.com) says Saddle Creek was founded in Omaha, Nebraska in 1993\. Its early releases came from Bright Eyes, Cursive and The Faint, the bands that put the city on the indie map. Later, the label added artists such as Big Thief, Rilo Kiley, Hop Along, Adrianne Lenker and Hand Habits.

More recent releases include records from Black Belt Eagle Scout, feeble little horse, Tomberlin and SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE. Through it all, the label remains rooted in Omaha. That sense of home shows in the catalog: records often feel handmade, personal and made among friends, even as the roster reaches far beyond Nebraska.

## 8 essential Saddle Creek albums

### 1\. The Faint: Blank-Wave Arcade

The Faint were among the label's early bands, and [Blank-Wave Arcade](https://thefaint.bandcamp.com/album/blank-wave-arcade?ref=unknowndivide.com) came out on Saddle Creek in 1999\. The band paired guitar and bass with synths and drum machines to make melodic, melancholic music that is still built for dancing. It was produced by the band with AJ Mogis in Lincoln, Nebraska. Start here for the darker, electronic side of early Omaha.

### 2\. Rilo Kiley: The Execution of All Things

Rilo Kiley were one of only a few bands from outside Omaha signed to the label at the time. [The Execution of All Things](https://rilokiley.bandcamp.com/album/the-execution-of-all-things?ref=unknowndivide.com), the Los Angeles band's second album, was produced by longtime Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis and features many labelmates. Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett lead a set of lyrically dense, twangy pop songs. It is the label's warmest early record.

### 3\. Hand Habits: Fun House + Blueprints

Hand Habits is the project of Los Angeles musician Meg Duffy. Fun House, produced by Sasami Ashworth, is described by the label as the most ambitious Hand Habits album, more personal and stylistically adventurous than earlier work. The expanded [Fun House + Blueprints](https://handhabits.bandcamp.com/album/fun-house-blueprints-2?ref=unknowndivide.com) edition adds live recordings and demos. Choose it if you want lush, searching songs.

### 4\. Tomberlin: i don't know who needs to hear this...

Sarah Beth Tomberlin grew up as a pastor's kid in rural Illinois and signed to Saddle Creek after posting songs to Bandcamp. Her second album, [i don't know who needs to hear this...](https://tomberlin.bandcamp.com/album/i-don-t-know-who-needs-to-hear-this?ref=unknowndivide.com), was recorded in Brooklyn over two weeks with producer Phil Weinrobe. She says its theme is to hold space for feelings, and the arrangements, with pedal steel and old acoustic sounds, do exactly that.

### 5\. Black Belt Eagle Scout: The Land, The Water, The Sky

In 2020 Katherine Paul moved from Portland back to the Skagit River and to Swinomish, her ancestral home. [The Land, The Water, The Sky](https://blackbelteaglescout.bandcamp.com/album/the-land-the-water-the-sky?ref=unknowndivide.com) is the result, a record the label calls a celebration of lineage and strength. It was recorded in Anacortes, Washington. Even in its heaviest moments the songs feel grounded and patient. This is the essential modern Saddle Creek album.

### 6\. Indigo De Souza: All of This Will End

[All of This Will End](https://indigodesouza.bandcamp.com/album/all-of-this-will-end?ref=unknowndivide.com) is Indigo De Souza's third album, an 11 song record about mortality, community and living in the present. She produced it with Alex Farrar, and the cover was painted by her mother. De Souza says the album feels more true to her than anything ever has. It is a raw but hopeful listen.

### 7\. feeble little horse: Girl with Fish

The Pittsburgh quartet followed their 2021 debut Hayday with [Girl with Fish](https://feeblelittlehorse.bandcamp.com/album/girl-with-fish?ref=unknowndivide.com), 11 self-recorded and self-produced songs that swing from blissed out pop to harsh noise and glitchy drum programming. The band kept whatever made them laugh. It shows how adventurous the label's newer signings can be.

### 8\. SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE: YOU'LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING

Zack Schwartz, Corey Wichlin and Rivka Ravede have spent a decade chopping up samples and rebuilding rock songs. [YOU'LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING](https://spiritofthebeehive.bandcamp.com/album/youll-have-to-lose-something?ref=unknowndivide.com), their fifth record, aims to soften some of the edges while staying deeply strange. The label calls it meticulous and quietly heartbreaking. Save it for last, when you are ready for the label at its most experimental.

## Where to go next

After these eight, go back to the founding Omaha records from Bright Eyes and Cursive, then explore the label's later artists such as Big Thief, Hop Along and Adrianne Lenker. The [Saddle Creek about page](https://saddle-creek.com/pages/about?ref=unknowndivide.com) and its store are the best places to see the current roster.

A good way to hear the label is as two eras side by side. The Faint and Rilo Kiley capture the close knit Omaha scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Black Belt Eagle Scout, Tomberlin and feeble little horse show a label that now gathers songwriters from everywhere, yet still values the same handmade honesty.

## How to start listening

- **For early Omaha:** The Faint, then Rilo Kiley.
- **For quiet, grounded songwriting:** Black Belt Eagle Scout, then Tomberlin.
- **For bold, personal indie rock:** Indigo De Souza, then Hand Habits.
- **For noisy experiments:** feeble little horse, then SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE.
