Snap SPECS just got its biggest pitch yet. Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, has named Robert Downey Jr. the honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer for [SPECS](https://www.specs.com/smart-glasses/specs-27?lang=en-US&ref=unknowndivide.com), its see-through augmented reality (AR) glasses, and he launched a run of short demo episodes today. If Snap SPECS just landed on your radar, here is what they are, what he is doing with them and how the preorder works right now.

The actor who played Tony Stark, Iron Man himself, says he was sold in under a minute. In [Snap's announcement](https://newsroom.snap.com/robert-downey-jr-joins-specs-as-cceo?ref=unknowndivide.com), Downey Jr. says he has tested practically every wearable from the last 20 years and was "absolutely sold on SPECS within 40 seconds," and that the glasses deliver "on the promise of AR glasses made by a certain techno optimist superhero I portrayed." Snap co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel says Downey Jr. has been imagining this technology for nearly twenty years.

## What Downey Jr. is actually doing

This is more than a face on a billboard. Snap says he will work across the SPECS team on new capabilities, new Lens experiences, original content, hardware and in-person experiences. His first project is a series of original episodes that put the glasses to work: setting up a workspace, mastering golf, relaxing with a show and building artistic skills. The first batch is live on the [official SPECS YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@specs?ref=unknowndivide.com) under titles like Experiment #278: Read the Green, Experiment #107: Masterpiece and Experiment #1610: Bediquette, with more to come.

The campaign hits TV tonight during the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers tip-off game, and an original episode airs during Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, October 23.

## What SPECS are

SPECS are a full computer built into a pair of glasses, with no puck or tether. You control them with your hands and voice, and digital content sits in the room around you while you still see the real world through the lenses. From the [official product page](https://www.specs.com/smart-glasses/specs-27?lang=en-US&ref=unknowndivide.com):

- Transparent waveguide display with 16 million colors and a 51 degree field of view, which Snap compares to a 115 inch screen seen from ten feet away
- Electrochromic lenses that shift from clear to tinted in about 10 seconds when you step outside
- Dual Snapdragon processors for hand tracking and low-latency world understanding
- Swiss TR90 frames in two sizes, Narrow Fit (47mm) and Wide Fit (52mm), at 132g and 136g
- Open-ear stereo speakers, a charging case, and a magnetic cable that can plug into a PC, phone or console for a giant screen
- Prescription inserts for single-vision prescriptions from -8 to +2 diopters through partners, sold separately

When Snap [opened the launch in September](https://newsroom.snap.com/making-computing-more-human-with-specs?ref=unknowndivide.com), it also showed live translation captions in 60 languages, walking navigation, a Harry Potter Lens with HBO Max, NBA and WNBA training drills, Spotify, and SPECS Intelligence, an artificial intelligence assistant that works across iPhone, Mac and the glasses. Snap says SPECS do not use facial recognition, and a front LED lights up whenever you record.

## Availability and how to preorder

SPECS are not shipping yet. They are on preorder in the US, the UK and France, and Snap lists them as expected to ship starting fall 2026\. You reserve a pair with a refundable deposit on [specs.com](https://www.specs.com/smart-glasses/specs-27?lang=en-US&ref=unknowndivide.com), then pay the balance when Snap reaches out closer to the shipping window, and you can cancel for a full deposit refund before the order is completed. There are two versions: Wi-Fi only, or Wi-Fi plus cellular with a 5G-capable charging case that needs a separate [Verizon](https://www.verizon.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) plan in the US. Check the current price on the product page, and use the virtual try-on on an iPhone to pick your size first. If you are in Los Angeles, the SPECS First Look at Westfield Century City lets you try them in person.
