Snow Peak makes camping gear that looks as good on a kitchen counter as it does at a campsite. Titanium mugs, folding fire pits and modular camp kitchens are its signatures, and several of them have become icons for the brand. If you have ever wondered why campers talk about this Japanese brand the way design fans talk about furniture makers, this guide is for you.

Here is a short history of Snow Peak and eight classics worth knowing.

## A short history of Snow Peak

Snow Peak was founded in 1958 by Yukio Yamai in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. According to the company's [own history](https://www.snowpeak.com/pages/our-history?ref=unknowndivide.com), Yamai found solace after World War II climbing the rugged Mt. Tanigawa. Unhappy with the climbing gear available, he started his own equipment company, working with the skilled metal craftsmen of his hometown, Tsubame-Sanjo. Niigata is still home to Snow Peak's global headquarters.

His son, Tohru Yamai, turned the company toward car camping. Tohru had studied in the United States during college and spent a summer road-tripping and camping around the West. He became chief executive officer (CEO) in 1980 and developed the first Amenity Dome tent, the Multi Kitchen Stand that led to the Iron Grill Table, and the Takibi Fire & Grill.

When sales fell for six straight years from the mid-1990s, a young employee suggested camping with customers to hear what they thought. That became Snow Peak Way, a customer camping event that the company says led to a complete reorganization and still sits at the center of its community. In 2014, Tohru's daughter Lisa joined and launched Snow Peak apparel. In the United States, the brand began in 1999 with wholesale distribution out of a garage in Gresham, Oregon, and opened its North American headquarters in Portland in 2020.

## 8 Snow Peak classics

### 1\. Ti-Double 450 Mug

If you buy one Snow Peak piece, it is usually this. The [Ti-Double 450 Mug](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/titanium-double-450-mug?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a double-wall titanium camping cup that holds 450 milliliters (15.2 fluid ounces) and weighs 3.6 ounces. The double wall keeps drinks warm or cool, and the slimmer Ti-Double 300 Mug nests inside it. Snow Peak says its titanium products are made in Tsubame-Sanjo and built to last a lifetime. One rule to remember: double-wall titanium cannot be used for cooking or placed over a heat source.

### 2\. Titanium Spork

Snow Peak calls the [Titanium Spork](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/titanium-spork?ref=unknowndivide.com) an icon since its launch. It is designed in Japan, made using a historic manufacturing process and weighs 0.6 ounces at 6.5 inches long. It comes in blue, purple and green anodized titanium and Snow Peak pitches it for meals at home or outside. It is one of the easiest ways to try the brand.

### 3\. Trek 900 Titanium

The [Trek 900](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/trek-900-titanium-cookset?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a titanium pot and fry pan set with a folding handle, weighing 6.2 ounces with a capacity of 30.4 fluid ounces. You can use it to measure, strain or boil over any heat source. Its clever trick is packing: it is large enough to stow a 250 gram fuel canister and a GigaPower stove, or a smaller Trek 700, and it fits inside the Trek 1400.

### 4\. GigaPower Stove 2.0 Auto

Snow Peak calls the [GigaPower Stove](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/gigapower-stove-2-0-auto?ref=unknowndivide.com) one of its most iconic products. This version has an auto-igniter, four foldable arms for stability and an output of 10,000 British thermal units (BTU) for fast boiling. It runs on iso-butane fuel, sold separately, weighs 4.23 ounces and comes with a storage case. Pair it with the Trek 900 above and you have a compact backcountry kitchen.

### 5\. Home & Camp Burner

The [Home & Camp Burner](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/home-camp-burner-set?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a tabletop gas stove designed to cross over between the campsite and the home kitchen. It folds down into a sleek shape for storage and opens in a four-step setup to reveal a stable burner with an auto-ignitor and an adjustable knob for flame control. Its expanded trivet supports large cookware for shared meals. The set version adds a padded storage bag that holds the burner and up to two gas canisters.

### 6\. Takibi Fire & Grill

The [Takibi Fire & Grill](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/takibi-fire-grill?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a stainless steel fire pit and grill that Snow Peak designed in Japan for a lifetime of use. It is packable, portable and modular, and the set includes the Pack & Carry L Fireplace, a base plate, a grill bridge, a grill and a carrying bag. The fireplace folds flat for transport. It received the Good Design Award for its structure, durability and ease of use, and Snow Peak calls it the heart of a whole collection that includes Takibi apparel and the Fire Tool Set.

### 7\. Iron Grill Table

The [Iron Grill Table](https://www.snowpeak.com/blogs/explore/behind-the-design-igt?ref=unknowndivide.com), or IGT, is Snow Peak's modular outdoor kitchen. You start with a frame in two, three or four unit sizes, fill it with inserts such as burners, grills, storage and worktops in half, one or two unit sizes, then choose legs in four heights: ground, low, sitting and standing. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. The easiest way in is the [Entry IGT Set](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/entry-igt-set?ref=unknowndivide.com), which pairs the Entry IGT table with a Flat Burner and a stainless tray.

### 8\. Amenity Dome 2

The Amenity Dome traces back to Tohru Yamai's push into car camping. The current [Amenity Dome 2](https://www.snowpeak.com/products/amenity-dome-2?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a Japanese-designed two-person tent in a natural earth tone. It has a symmetrical vestibule with arched doors on both sides, triangular mesh panels for ventilation and poles that slot into the rainfly, so the fly can stand alone as a simple shelter. The inner tent clips to the inside of the fly, which keeps it dry while you set up.

## Why Snow Peak is worth knowing

Three things run through the lineup. First, craft: the titanium pieces are made in Tsubame-Sanjo, and the Pack & Carry fireplaces are designed and manufactured in Niigata. Second, it is built to work together: mugs nest, pots swallow stoves, and the IGT system takes burners, grills and storage inserts from across the range. Third, it is designed to last. The site promotes a lifetime guarantee, and Snow Peak's warranty page says it designs everything with the intention of lasting a lifetime, while selling replacement parts for pieces that wear.
