SOUND FUJI vinyl is finally here. SOUND FUJI, the archive project from the Japanese label King Records, has opened preorders on its first ever vinyl series, and it is doing it with Seattle reissue label Light in the Attic Records. Five Japanese rare groove albums recorded between 1976 and 1981 are coming back on record, each newly cut from 96 kHz, 24 bit transfers of the original master tapes, with the original jacket, obi strip and liner notes reproduced. The worldwide release date is April 16, 2027, and preorders are open now through [Light in the Attic](https://lightintheattic.net/collections/sound-fuji-king-records?ref=unknowndivide.com) and [SOUND FUJI](https://soundfuji.kingrecords.co.jp/products/?ref=unknowndivide.com).

If you have spent any time in the Japanese jazz kissa rabbit hole, the listening bars where records are played loud on serious hi-fi, this is the batch you have been waiting for. Three of the five have never been on colored vinyl, and two have never been reissued on vinyl at all.

## The five records

**Fujimaru Band,** [**BGM**](https://lightintheattic.net/products/bgm?ref=unknowndivide.com) **(1977).** The headliner. Guitarist Fujimaru Yoshino, a studio player behind classic Japanese pop hits like "Momen no Handkerchief," led this band for its only album, and it has quietly piled up more than 9 million streams as listeners outside Japan found it. This edition is its first on colored vinyl, pressed on uncolored virgin vinyl as a Pure Vinyl edition. DJ Tatsuo Sunaga points out that the album holds the roots of "Lonely Man," the ending theme of the detective drama Tantei Monogatari.

**Isao Suzuki,** [**Three Cushion**](https://lightintheattic.net/products/three-cushion?ref=unknowndivide.com) **(1981).** Bassist Isao Suzuki teams with tenor saxophone heavyweight Akira Miyazawa for a straight hard bop session, with Motohiko Hino on drums. It was Suzuki's first digital recording, and this is its first ever vinyl reissue, on black vinyl.

**Takeru Muraoka and His New Group,** [**Soft Landing**](https://lightintheattic.net/products/soft-landing?ref=unknowndivide.com) **(1978).** Saxophonist Takeru Muraoka's second album slides between jazz, funk and disco, with Susumu Kazuhara on trumpet and Masanori Sasaji on keyboards. It lands on Clear Deep Blue vinyl, its first time on color.

**Akira Ishikawa and Count Buffalo,** [**Okinawa**](https://lightintheattic.net/products/okinawa?ref=unknowndivide.com) **(1976).** Drummer Akira Ishikawa's concept record mixes funk, Afro grooves, disco and Okinawan folk songs, with arrangements by Koichi Sugiyama and chorus work from Kayoko Ishu and Time Five. First time on colored vinyl, pressed on clear.

**Ebonee Webb, Disco Hanagasa Ondo / Soma Bon Uta: Memphis Soul Meets Japanese Folk Songs (1979).** The wild card. A Memphis funk and soul group, recording in Japan, turns regional folk songs into disco with arranger Chikara Ueda. A true cult record, getting its first ever vinyl reissue on black vinyl.

## Which one to grab

Start with BGM. It is the record most likely to sell through, it is the one with the streaming numbers behind it, and the Pure Vinyl pressing is the collector piece of the run. If you want the whole set, Light in the Attic also lists a [five LP bundle](https://lightintheattic.net/products/sound-fuji-king-records-bundle?ref=unknowndivide.com) that gathers every title.
