A few shoes are so tied to one idea that their name becomes the category. The Sperry Authentic Original is that shoe for boat shoes. It has a moccasin toe, a lace that wraps all the way around the collar and a white rubber sole cut with fine grooves. It was built to keep sailors upright on a wet deck, and it ended up becoming a warm weather staple far from any marina.

## Who makes it

[Sperry](https://www.sperry.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) traces its story to 1935, when founder Paul Sperry fell overboard from his boat. Looking for a better grip, he took inspiration from the footpads of his cocker spaniel and created what the brand calls the world's first non slip deck shoe. Sperry patented the non slip sole in 1939, and in 1940 the United States (US) Navy named Sperry the standard issue shoe for its casual uniform.

Sperry still describes its designs as coastal inspired and anchored in performance, and it calls the Authentic Original its most iconic silhouette.

## What the Authentic Original is

The [Authentic Original 2-Eye](https://www.sperry.com/products/authentic-original-2-eye-boat-shoe-dark-blue?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a low, laced moccasin with two eyelets at the front. Sperry says it is handsewn using time honored craftsmanship and premium materials, and it is offered in leather and suede.

The key parts are simple:

- Construction: traditional moccasin construction, handsewn
- Uppers: leather or suede, depending on the version
- Lacing: 360 degree lacing system that runs around the collar for a snug, adjustable fit
- Cushioning: ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) cushioning for comfort
- Outsole: non marking rubber with razor cut Wave-Siping for stability and grip in wet conditions
- Shape: round toe, flat heel

## Why it is cool

The sole is the whole story. Siping means cutting thin slits into rubber. Sperry's wave pattern lets the sole flex and grip on slick surfaces, the problem Paul Sperry set out to solve after his fall. It is a rare piece of fashion that started as safety gear.

The lacing is just as smart. Because the lace threads all the way around the collar, you can cinch the shoe to your foot like a drawstring bag. That keeps it secure without a stiff heel counter, and it gives the shoe its recognizable look, with the lace ends tied at the front.

The moccasin build makes the shoe soft and flexible, so it feels broken in quickly. You can see the hand stitching around the toe.

And the style holds up. The Authentic Original pairs with shorts, chinos, rolled jeans and linen. It works with a casual suit in summer and with a T shirt on the weekend. Leather versions take on character with wear, while suede gives a softer look.

## How to wear them

The boat shoe is a warm weather staple, and it is easier to style than it looks. Pair it with chinos rolled once at the ankle, shorts or relaxed jeans for a classic summer outfit. A plain oxford shirt, a striped T shirt or a simple polo keeps the look clean. Most people wear boat shoes without socks, so a no show sock is a good idea if you want to stay comfortable on long days.

Leather boat shoes reward a little care. Wipe them down after a day near the water, let them dry naturally away from heat, and condition the leather now and then. With time the leather softens and takes on a lived in look that suits the shoe perfectly.

## Who should buy it

Buy the Authentic Original if you want a classic summer shoe with real history, if you spend time on boats or near water, or if you want something more relaxed than a loafer and smarter than a sneaker. It is also a good first step into heritage footwear.

Think twice if you need arch support for long walks or a shoe for cold, wet winters. This is a lightweight casual shoe, best for warm days. Traditionally it is worn without visible socks, so a pair of no show socks helps.
