Long before viral tumblers, there was the green Stanley bottle. Construction crews, hunters, anglers and long-haul drivers have been pouring coffee from it for generations, and plenty of those old bottles are still in service. The modern version, sold as the Classic Legendary Bottle, looks almost exactly the same, and it is still one of the best vacuum bottles you can buy.

Here is what it is, where it came from, which size to get and where to buy one.

## What it is

The [Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle](https://www.stanley1913.com/products/classic-legendary-bottle-1-1-qt-1?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a double-wall vacuum insulated bottle made from recycled 18/8 stainless steel. Two steel walls with a vacuum between them stop heat moving in or out, so hot coffee stays hot and cold drinks stay cold. Stanley says the popular 1.1-quart size keeps drinks hot or cold for a full day.

The design is refreshingly simple. A leakproof twist-and-pour stopper lets you pour without taking it out, and the insulated lid doubles as a drinking cup. The 1.1-quart model is slim enough to hold in one hand, stands about 14.25 inches tall and weighs 1.85 pounds empty. It is free of bisphenol A (BPA) and the bottle is dishwasher safe.

## Where it came from

Stanley traces the bottle back to [William Stanley Jr.](https://www.stanley1913.com/pages/about-stanley?ref=unknowndivide.com), a physicist and inventor with more than 100 patents to his name. In 1913 he combined vacuum insulation with the strength of steel and created the all-steel, double-wall vacuum bottle. Before that, vacuum bottles were lined with glass, which kept coffee hot right up until someone dropped one. As the company tells it, Stanley simply wanted his coffee to stay hot all day at work, and borrowed ideas from his earlier work on electrical transformers.

For decades Stanley bottles were built with a method the company called Char-Vac, packing charcoal dust between the steel walls as the vacuum was created. It made them incredibly tough, but heavy and bulky. Stanley dropped Char-Vac in 2009 in favor of a thicker outer wall, which made the bottle much lighter without losing performance. Along the way it widened the neck for easier filling and cleaning, switched to more corrosion-resistant steel and reduced the number of welds to cut down on weak points. The look never changed much, and the Hammertone Green finish is still the one most people picture.

## Why it is still worth buying

- **It is built to take abuse.** Stanley calls it leakproof, sweatproof and drop-proof, and the steel body shrugs off truck beds, job sites and campsites.
- **It holds heat for real.** A full day of hot coffee from one fill is exactly what the bottle was invented for, and it still does that job better than most new designs.
- **The cup lid is smart.** You never need to pack a mug, and the insulated cup keeps each pour warm while you drink it.
- **It is covered for life.** Stanley's lifetime warranty on its stainless steel vacuum products covers defects and loss of thermal performance, as long as you buy from Stanley or an authorized seller. Everyday dents and scratches are not covered, but on this bottle they are part of the character.
- **It looks right.** The hammered green finish and plain shape have barely changed in generations, so it looks as good on a desk as it does in a tackle box.

## Which size to buy

- **1.1 quart.** The everyday size and the one most people should buy. Slim, easy to carry and enough for about four big mugs of coffee.
- **1.5 quart.** Adds a collapsible handle for grab-and-go carrying. A good pick for long shifts or for sharing with a second person.
- **2 quart.** The big one, with a folding handle that also keeps it from rolling around in a truck bed, boat or trailer. Stanley says it keeps drinks hot or cold for up to two days.

Stanley also makes a 1-quart version and a matching Classic Legendary Food Jar for soup, stew and chili.

## How to get the most from it

For the longest heat retention, preheat the bottle: fill it with hot water, close it for a few minutes, pour that out and then add your coffee. For cold drinks, do the same with ice water. Keep the stopper closed between pours, since every opening lets a little heat escape, and fill it close to the top, because less air inside means slower cooling. Rinse the stopper by hand now and then to keep the seal clean, even though the bottle itself can go in the dishwasher.

## Where to buy

Stanley sells every size and color direct from its official store, and the bottle is widely available from authorized sellers. Some listings use the name Classic Vacuum Bottle or Heritage Classic, but it is the same bottle. Buy from Stanley or a listing sold by an authorized seller so the lifetime warranty applies.
