The headphone mixing system that a lot of home producers swear by just had its biggest day in years. At its 11·2·26 launch event, [Steven Slate Audio](https://stevenslateaudio.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) introduced three things at once: **Horizon One**, a new closed-back VSX headphone, **VSX 8.0** with an all-new ROOM mode, and **MSX**, which brings the company's speaker and room modeling to the AirPods Pro already in your pocket.

The official launch event from the Steven Slate Audio YouTube channel.

## Steven Slate VSX Horizon One headphones

Steven Slate VSX works by putting you inside modeled studios, clubs and cars through a pair of headphones, so the room you actually sit in stops lying to you about bass and balance. Horizon One is the next generation of the closed-back VSX headphone, and Slate is billing it as "a new standard in closed-back monitoring."

The build is a big step up in feel. The frame is premium aluminum and the ear cups are figured maple wood, the kind of grain you usually see on a boutique guitar top. Inside is an advanced 50mm dynamic driver that the company says was engineered for ultra-low distortion, clarity and detail. Closed-back means isolation, so this is the pair for tracking vocals, working late next to someone sleeping, or mixing on a laptop in a noisy room.

It sits next to Immersion One, the open-back flagship with planar magnetic drivers. Both run the same VSX speaker and room modeling, so the choice comes down to isolation versus openness. Not sure which way to go? Our [open-back vs closed-back explainer](https://www.unknowndivide.com/open-back-vs-closed-back-headphones-explained/) breaks it down. Existing VSX owners get an exclusive Horizon One loyalty upgrade offer, with details on the [official VSX page](https://stevenslateaudio.com/vsx?ref=unknowndivide.com).

## Slate VSX 8.0 and the new ROOM mode

VSX 8.0 is the software side of the launch, which Slate calls its next generation of virtual speaker modeling. The headline is the all-new ROOM mode, which the company says brings an entirely new dimension of realism to the listening experience. The core VSX idea stays the same: world-class speakers in professionally designed rooms, plus emulated car systems and club rigs so your mix passes the car test before you ever leave the chair.

## Steven Slate MSX: studio monitoring on AirPods Pro

MSX is the wildcard. It takes the same modeling and runs it on AirPods Pro. You get three professional speaker systems in one carefully modeled room, a massive club system to check your low end, a car stereo for the translation test, and boombox and phone references for the way most people actually hear music.

The smart part is how it leans on the hardware. AirPods Pro use onboard adaptive equalization to keep the low end more consistent as fit and seal change, and Slate says MSX is designed around that platform before applying its own monitoring models. There is a 14 day free trial on the [MSX page](https://stevenslateaudio.com/msx?ref=unknowndivide.com) with no credit card required. MSX is an independent Steven Slate Audio product and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Apple.

## Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. Headphone mixing used to be a compromise you apologized for. Between a nicer closed-back pair, a smarter engine and a version that runs on earbuds millions of people already own, Slate is making the case that the room matters less than ever.
