The Teenage Engineering EP-35 is the gadget music and gear fans are searching for this week, and it is the Swedish company's most unexpected product in a while. Instead of another pocket synth, Teenage Engineering built a portable amp you can plug a guitar and a microphone into at the same time, stream music to over Bluetooth, and connect to a computer as an audio interface. It even has a storage compartment that the official guide says is for cables, accessories, or beer. The EP-35 is on sale now through the [official Teenage Engineering store](https://teenage.engineering/store/ep-35?ref=unknowndivide.com). Here is what it does and why people are excited.

## One box, three jobs

According to the [official EP-35 user guide](https://teenage.engineering/guides/ep-35?ref=unknowndivide.com), the unit works as a hub for everything that makes sound around you. On the panel you get:

- A 6.35mm guitar input with a hi mode that drops the gain by 6 decibels (dB), made for active pickups or a pedalboard
- An XLR microphone input with a 48 volt phantom power switch, so condenser mics work too
- A 3.5mm line input for a phone, a synth or a drum machine
- A line and headphone output

Each input has its own gain control, and the guitar and microphone each get a dedicated effects section. There are eight guitar effects, from clean and twang to blues, overdrive and indie, and eight microphone effects that run from radio and megaphone to robo choir and frog. Every effect has an amount dial, so you can go from a touch of color to something completely ridiculous.

## A speaker that also records

The EP-35 is also a Bluetooth speaker. It uses Bluetooth 5.3 with Low Energy (LE) Audio, and it supports Auracast, which lets several EP-35 units pair together and play as a single Bluetooth device. Tilt one to the left or right before starting broadcast mode and it becomes the left or right speaker in a stereo pair. Inside is a 4 inch woofer and a 1 inch tweeter driven by 35 watts, with a maximum sound level of 94 dB at one meter.

Plug it into a computer over USB and it shows up as an audio interface, with the guitar, the microphone and the line input on separate channels so you can record a jam straight into your music software and mix it later. A separate port, which Teenage Engineering calls the ep-plug, connects the [KO II sampler](https://teenage.engineering/products/ep-133?ref=unknowndivide.com) and accessories such as a USB drive that plays loops, a handheld mic, an antenna accessory called the amptenna for radio and the kopedal foot controller.

## Built for outside

This is a speaker meant to leave the house. The guide lists a 20.1 watt hour battery that charges in about 2 hours and plays for about 12 hours at volume 5\. The case is splash resistant against sweat and spills, though not waterproof. A camp light inside the storage compartment can be set to on, off or auto, and a disco mode makes its lights react to the music. Tilt the EP-35 away from you and the same lights show how much battery is left. There is also a volume limit you can set in the web settings, which is handy if the amp is going to a kid or a crowded campsite.

## How to get one

The EP-35 is available now from the official store, and the [EP-35 product page](https://teenage.engineering/products/ep-35?ref=unknowndivide.com) has the full spec sheet. Prices vary by region, so check the official store for the current figure where you live rather than trusting a number you saw elsewhere.

This one is Surfacing. A guitar amp, a karaoke machine, a party speaker and a recording interface in one splash resistant box is exactly the kind of left turn that made Teenage Engineering a cult brand.
