Thirty-seven years in, [Teenage Fanclub](https://mergerecords.com/blogs/news/teenage-fanclub-release-new-album-do-not-dare-to-dream?ref=unknowndivide.com) still know exactly where the warm spot in a guitar chord lives. *Do Not Dare to Dream*, the band's 13th studio album, landed on October 9 through Merge Records, and it might be the coziest record you hear all fall. It was made far from any city, on the remote Scottish island of Great Bernera, with a church organ humming under almost everything.

## An island, an organ and five people in a room

The band recorded at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera, and Merge says the studio's Domus church organ is all over the album, sitting alongside synthesizers, acoustic textures and the interlocking guitars the band built its name on. Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley have led the group since the beginning, and the current lineup rounds out with Euros Childs, Francis Macdonald and David McGowan. According to the label, Blake and McGinley went into these sessions with a looser plan than usual, leaving room for the whole band to shape the songs.

McGinley put the goal plainly in Merge's announcement: he wants a record that sounds like the people who made it, not an idealized idea of "a good record." That is the appeal here. Nothing on *Do Not Dare to Dream* is chasing a trend. It sounds like friends who have played together for decades and trust each other completely.

## A title that rolls its eyes

The name comes from Blake's song "I Do Not Dare to Dream," which the band's Bandcamp notes describe as an anthem built on ringing acoustic guitars that ends with two electric guitars wrapping around each other. Blake has said the title pokes fun at the motivational "dare to dream" memes he finds a little ridiculous. Even so, this is not a gloomy album. Like 2023's *Nothing Lasts Forever*, it takes stock of a rough moment without sinking into it. "We can still be cheerful and optimistic in the face of things not being great," McGinley says.

The ten songs run "There Was You," "Tomorrow People," "Over and Over," "Be With You Tonight," "The Same Air," "I Do Not Dare to Dream," "Take Time," "Day in the Sun," "Somewhere to Land" and "Young and Wise." Start with the opener above, then go straight to "Day in the Sun," which already has its own official video.

## Why it matters

Bands this old usually either coast or reinvent themselves badly. Teenage Fanclub did neither. They went somewhere quiet, used what was in the room and made a record about staying hopeful without pretending everything is fine. If your shelf already has the jangly, harmony-heavy corners of indie rock, this belongs next to them.

Building the shelf? Our [gifts for vinyl collectors](https://www.unknowndivide.com/gifts-for-vinyl-collectors/) and [record cleaning picks](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-record-cleaning-and-care-gear/) will keep the orange pressing spinning clean, and the [Record Store Day Black Friday list](https://www.unknowndivide.com/record-store-day-black-friday-2026-list-what-to-chase/) covers what else is worth chasing this season.
