Tesla finally pulled the cover off the new Roadster tonight, and it is not a normal sports car reveal. In a livestream that started at 7:55 PM Central Time (8:55 PM Eastern) on Thursday, October 15, Tesla showed a two-door car built around active aerodynamics, a fan-driven suction system and SpaceX-style cold-gas thrusters. Elon Musk had been building the hype all week, calling it "a candidate for greatest product demo of all time" and, this morning, a car "beyond movies, beyond imagination, beyond human, yet still made by humans on Earth."

## What Tesla showed

Tesla's own reveal film closes with the Roadster launching off a curved ramp and into the air, trailing thruster gas, and the company is not shy about the claim. On the [official Roadster page](https://www.tesla.com/roadster?ref=unknowndivide.com), Tesla describes the top version as "air ready" and adds, "So yes, it can fly." In a [post during the stream](https://x.com/Tesla/status/2110905588402295283?ref=unknowndivide.com), Tesla said the thrusters let the car accelerate forward and upward and rotate laterally. Tesla says its fan and ground sealing system pulls enough air from under the car to hold it upside down while it is standing still.

The engineering pitch is simple. Tesla says every car on the road is limited by tire grip, and that the Roadster's thruster system makes four to five times the force the tires can. SpaceX has used thrusters to position spacecraft for decades, and Tesla says making them work in air instead of a vacuum took all-new hardware. Every usable void in the car is packed with Carbon Fiber Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs), and more compressed gas means more flight time.

## Three versions, from road to rocket

- **Performance.** Road ready with two seats, active aerodynamics and the suction system. Offered by reservation, with Tesla quoting 0 to 60 in under 1.6 seconds.
- **Thrust.** Race ready with two seats and rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters. A limited release, quoted at 0 to 60 in under 0.9 seconds.
- **Rocket.** Air ready with one seat and thrusters around the whole perimeter. Invite only, quoted at 0 to 60 in under 0.59 seconds, and Tesla notes it is not approved for public road use and will not be offered in every region.

Tesla lists range at more than 300 miles and a top speed of more than 230 miles per hour for the Rocket.

## The design

Tesla says its design language has moved on since the last Roadster preview, through Cybertruck, Cybercab and the Optimus robot, and that this car takes cues from the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane and the F-35 fighter jet. Concealed headlights, a full-length taillight and flush surfaces hide the aero until Track Mode lowers the car and deploys the wings. Tesla calls that the best passive downforce package of any road car, approaching Formula 1 levels, with wing movement driven by the Optimus actuator system.

The finish is pure aerospace. Ano White paint borrows from rocket coatings, with ultraviolet and cryogenic protection, and Gold Glazed glass mimics the copper tint of a spacesuit visor. Inside, there is an Ultrawhite cabin with gray microsuede, a yoke built for steer by wire, a center touchscreen with two small forward displays, manual controls and a fixed seat to save weight, plus magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber throughout. If the new car's slab sides remind you of the [Tesla Robovan](https://www.unknowndivide.com/tesla-robovan-redefining-autonomous-mobility-for-the-future/), that is the point.

## When it arrives and how to reserve

Reservations for the Performance version are open now on [tesla.com/roadster](https://www.tesla.com/roadster?ref=unknowndivide.com). Thrust is a limited release and Rocket is invite only. Tesla did not give a delivery date in its reveal posts or on the Roadster page, so treat any timeline you see elsewhere as a guess until Tesla confirms it. The same night brought the [Porsche Mission S](https://www.unknowndivide.com/porsche-mission-s-mid-engine-supercar-above-911-new-york-reveal/) to New York, which makes this a big week for anyone who cares about where the supercar goes next. ## Shop the Roadster

- **The shelf version.** A [Tesla Roadster die-cast model](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Tesla+Roadster+diecast+model&tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com) is the only Roadster most of us will park this year.
- **The pocket version.** [Hot Wheels Tesla cars](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Hot+Wheels+Tesla&tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com) cover the lineup at toy-aisle scale.
- **The sibling.** A [Tesla Cybertruck die-cast model](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Tesla+Cybertruck+diecast+model&tag=unknowndivi02-20&ref=unknowndivide.com) shares the same hard-edged design language.
