The Mosquito Bowl is in theaters now. Peter Berg's World War II film opened in select theaters on October 30 and comes to Netflix on November 25, and searches for where the Mosquito Bowl is playing, who is in it and whether it is a true story have climbed today. Here is what Netflix has confirmed so far, from the cast to the real Marines behind it.

Netflix laid out the details in its [official Tudum guide](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/the-mosquito-bowl?ref=unknowndivide.com), and the film already has a [title page on Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/title/81661161?ref=unknowndivide.com) you can save to your list ahead of the streaming date.

## What The Mosquito Bowl is about

After Pearl Harbor, four of the best college football players in America set their careers aside and enlist in the Marines. The film follows them from packed stadiums through Marine training and into combat in the Pacific, and it takes its title from a real football game that Marines played on the island of Guadalcanal, with a roster full of former college standouts.

Berg is clear about what kind of movie this is. In the [trailer announcement](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/the-mosquito-bowl-trailer?ref=unknowndivide.com), he tells Netflix it is not a football movie but a war movie that happens to have football players in the middle of the war. The red band trailer does not soften the violence, so know that going in.

## The cast and the real men they play

- **Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry:** a Brown University quarterback coached by his own father, and the steady leader of the group.
- **Bill Skarsgård as Bob Bauman:** a larger than life University of Wisconsin player who charges into every fight.
- **Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich:** the Purdue star who set records on the field.
- **Tom Francis as Dave Schreiner:** an All-American at Wisconsin and Bauman's best friend. It is his first film, after a Tony-nominated run on Broadway in Sunset Boulevard.

Berg also appears on screen as General Simon Buckner. Galitzine told Netflix the cast did nearly everything themselves with limited use of stunt doubles, with explosives going off a few feet away and trees on fire around them.

## Is The Mosquito Bowl a true story

Yes. The film is adapted from Buzz Bissinger's 2022 nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Netflix's [true story feature](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/the-mosquito-bowl-movie-true-story?ref=unknowndivide.com) explains how Bissinger found the game almost by accident, and how his own father served in the 4th Marine Regiment, one of the two regiments that played. The game featured three All-Americans and seven former college captains, and it gave the players a brief return to the people they had been before the war, ahead of the Battle of Okinawa.

Bissinger rebuilt their lives from letters and family archives. Schreiner's papers were kept by the [Wisconsin Historical Society](https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/?ref=unknowndivide.com), McLaughry's family held a deep archive, and Bauman's niece helped fill in his story. It also reunites Bissinger and Berg, who directed the 2004 film of Bissinger's Friday Night Lights.

## Where it was made and who made it

The Mosquito Bowl was shot in Australia, in Queensland and northern New South Wales, with Berg's team building practical battle sets to put the actors inside the fight. Berg directed and produced through Film 44, alongside Brian Grazer for [Imagine Entertainment](https://www.imagine-entertainment.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com) and Alex Gayner. It follows American Primeval and Painkiller as the latest Berg and Film 44 project with Netflix.

## Where to watch The Mosquito Bowl

Right now it is only in select theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes. It arrives on Netflix on November 25, which makes it an easy pick for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Our [Behemoth](https://www.unknowndivide.com/behemoth-trailer-pedro-pascal-tony-gilroy-december-4/) and [Dune: Part Three](https://www.unknowndivide.com/dune-part-three-final-trailer-december-18/) rundowns cover two more big December films, and the [Pendulum](https://www.unknowndivide.com/pendulum-trailer-joseph-gordon-levitt-phoebe-dynevor-january-1/) trailer is out too.

## Our call

This one is Surfacing. A true story this specific, with a cast this strong and a director who already made the defining football film, is worth seeing on a big screen while it is there. If not, mark November 25 and read the book first.
