The opening single, Loving, Leaving, is out now, and it sets the tone for a record built on change. For the last 20 years, Tindersticks worked out of a studio that Stuart A. Staples describes as an ambient, almost church like place. They left it behind for an underground, hidden space, and Staples calls the change a jolt. In his words, the album "was borne of a new studio, new ways of working, new desires, even a new confidence." That is a striking thing to hear from a band this deep into its run. Fifteen albums in, most groups settle into a method that works. Staples says the opposite happened here. In the new room, the old methods did not seem to work, and the band had to find new solutions. That sense of starting over is what makes this announcement more than a routine album cycle. The official credits on the new single say the songs were written, composed and produced by Staples, and the cover art comes from Sidonie Osborne Staples. Her artwork is a hand stitched piece of fabric, with cut cloth flowers, curling green stems and the band name sewn in red thread. It feels handmade and a little wild, which suits a record about rebuilding from scratch. ## The first single Loving, Leaving opens the album and leads the campaign. It is the right pick. The title alone carries the push and pull that runs through the announcement, a band holding on to what it loves while walking away from the place where it made so much of its work.
