Some pens are tools, some are toys and a few manage to be both. The TWSBI Diamond 580ALR sits right in that sweet spot. It is a clear piston filling fountain pen with machined aluminum parts, a big ink capacity and a design that invites you to take it apart. For anyone who has outgrown a starter pen and wants something more substantial without stepping into luxury territory, it is one of the most interesting options around.

## What it is

The [Diamond 580ALR](https://twsbi.com/products/twsbi-diamond-580alr-nickel-gray-fountain-pen?ref=unknowndivide.com) is part of [TWSBI](https://twsbi.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com)'s Diamond family, which also includes the earlier 530 and 540\. TWSBI says the idea behind the Diamond line was to go back to basics and capture the simplicity and elegance of traditional writing instruments, fusing traditional fountain pen mechanisms with modern industrial design.

The ALR version builds on the popular 580AL. In TWSBI's words, it adds a matte finish and subtle details on the grip and cap, along with a newly machined aluminum grip, connector and piston rod. The Nickel Gray edition pairs a clear faceted barrel with gray metal parts, which gives it a clean, technical look.

## Key features

- **Piston filling system:** the barrel is the ink reservoir, with no cartridge or converter needed.
- **Bigger capacity:** TWSBI says the 580 holds about 30% more ink than the 530.
- **Smoother cap threads:** TWSBI says the 580 improves the smoothness of the cap thread turning.
- **Improved grip and end barrel** compared with the 540.
- **Aluminum parts:** machined aluminum grip, connector and piston rod on the ALR.
- **Fully detachable:** all parts can be taken apart and reassembled.
- **Nibs:** EF, F, M, B and stub options.
- **Ink:** not included.

## Built to be taken apart

Most pens are sealed boxes. The 580 is the opposite. TWSBI says it felt it was important to let the user disassemble and reassemble the pen and completely experience the traditional aspects of owning and using a fountain pen. That is why the 580 has all detachable parts.

That openness is practical. You can clean the pen thoroughly between inks, look after every part yourself and understand exactly how it works. It is a little like owning a bike you can tune yourself, instead of one you have to take to a shop.

## Choosing a nib

TWSBI's nib advice is refreshingly direct. If you write small, choose EF. For a normal hand, F is the most popular. If you lean toward bigger writing, M will be perfect. B is for statements, like signing your name or writing headers. Stub nibs give an italic look, with thick downstrokes and thin cross strokes, which is ideal for cards and invitations.

## Why it is cool

The clear barrel turns the ink into part of the design. Fill it with a deep blue or a burnt orange and the whole pen changes character. The aluminum grip adds weight and a cool, matte feel in the hand, and the clear body means you never have to guess how much ink is left.

It is also a great teacher. Because you can see the piston move and take the pen apart, you learn how fountain pens actually work. If you want to compare the 580's piston with cartridges, converters and vacuum fillers, see our guide to [fountain pen filling systems](https://www.unknowndivide.com/fountain-pen-filling-systems-explained/).

## ECO or 580?

TWSBI's own [ECO](https://www.unknowndivide.com/twsbi-eco-piston-fountain-pen/) also uses a piston and costs less. The ECO is lighter and simpler, a great everyday worker. The 580ALR is the upgrade: more ink, aluminum parts and a design made to be serviced for years. If you already love your ECO and want a step up, the 580ALR is the natural next pen.

Also worth comparing are the pens in our roundup of the [best fountain pens](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-fountain-pens/) and our explainer on [LAMY's Safari, AL star and 2000](https://www.unknowndivide.com/lamy-pens-explained-safari-al-star-2000/).

## Who should buy it

The 580ALR suits writers who use bottled ink, like to tinker and want a pen that feels solid in the hand. It is ideal for journal keepers and anyone who writes long notes by hand. Pair it with good paper like the [Leuchtturm1917 120G notebook](https://www.unknowndivide.com/leuchtturm1917-120g-a5-notebook/) and the experience gets even better.

## Where to buy

TWSBI sells the Diamond 580ALR directly, and pen shops carry it in several colors and nib sizes. Remember to order ink, since the pen ships without it.
