Most first fountain pens run on cartridges. You snap one in, write until it runs dry and then buy more. The TWSBI ECO takes a different route. It is a piston filler, so it draws bottled ink straight into its clear barrel, and it holds a lot of it. That one detail opens up the whole world of bottled ink, and it is why the ECO has become one of the most recommended first steps beyond a disposable pen. Here is what it is, how it works and who it suits.

## What it is

The [TWSBI ECO](https://twsbi.com/products/twsbi-eco-black-fountain-pen?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a demonstrator fountain pen from [TWSBI](https://twsbi.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com). "Demonstrator" means the barrel is clear, so you can see the mechanism and the ink inside. TWSBI pitches the ECO at everyone from the beginner who just wants to try a fountain pen to the expert, and calls it a good everyday worker.

The key details, according to TWSBI:

- **Filling system:** piston filler, built into the pen.
- **Nibs:** EF, F, M, B and a Stub 1.1 italic nib.
- **Colors:** White with a clear barrel, or Black with a clear barrel.
- **Cap:** posts securely onto the back of the pen while you write.
- **Seal:** an inner cap inside the cap to keep the nib sealed when the pen is stored.
- **Ink:** not included, so plan to buy a bottle.

## How the piston works

A piston filler is the simplest idea in fountain pens. The barrel itself is the ink reservoir, and a rubber seal on a rod moves up and down inside it. Turn the knob at the end of the barrel one way and the piston moves toward the nib, pushing out air. Dip the nib in ink and turn the knob back, and the piston pulls ink up into the barrel. TWSBI sums it up in three steps: unscrew the end cap, dip into ink, screw the end cap back, and you are ready to write.

Because the whole barrel holds ink, there is no cartridge or converter taking up space. That is the big practical win. You fill less often, and every refill costs only a little ink from a bottle. For a full comparison of cartridges, converters, pistons and vacuum fillers, read our guide to [fountain pen filling systems](https://www.unknowndivide.com/fountain-pen-filling-systems-explained/).

## Choosing a nib

TWSBI offers a refreshingly simple rule for picking a nib size. If you write small, choose EF. If you write normally, F is the most popular choice. If you write larger, M will suit you. B is for bold statements, such as signatures, headers or showing off an ink with lots of shading. The Stub 1.1 is an italic nib that makes thin horizontal strokes and thicker vertical ones, which is ideal for cards and invitations.

One extra tip: if your paper is thin or rough, a finer nib puts down less ink and is less likely to feather or bleed through. Good paper makes any nib better. A notebook like the [Leuchtturm1917 120G A5](https://www.unknowndivide.com/leuchtturm1917-120g-a5-notebook/) was made with fountain pens in mind.

## Why it is cool

The clear barrel is more than decoration. You can always see exactly how much ink is left, so a pen never runs dry in the middle of a meeting by surprise. It also makes the ECO a showcase for color. Fill it with a deep teal or a bright orange and the whole pen takes on that shade.

The design is honest. There is a simple cap, a smooth grip, a clear body and a contrasting piston knob, and nothing else. It looks like a tool rather than a piece of jewelry, which is exactly the point of an everyday pen.

It is also a gateway. Once you have filled a pen from a bottle, the range of inks you can use grows from a handful of cartridge colors to thousands of options. If you outgrow the ECO, TWSBI's own [Diamond 580ALR](https://www.unknowndivide.com/twsbi-diamond-580alr-fountain-pen/) uses the same piston idea in a larger body with an aluminum grip.

## Care and cleaning

Flush the pen with clean water when you change ink colors, and every few weeks if you use the same ink. Run the piston up and down in a cup of water until it comes out clear, then let the pen dry with the cap off. Keep the cap on when you are not writing; the inner cap is there to stop the nib from drying out.

## Who should buy it

The ECO is for anyone ready to move beyond cartridges, students who take lots of handwritten notes, journal keepers and anyone who loves ink colors. ## Where to buy

TWSBI sells the ECO directly, and pen shops carry it in both colors and every nib size. Pick the nib first, then the color. Remember to order a bottle of fountain pen ink at the same time, since the pen ships without one.
