Most fountain pens fill with a cartridge, a converter or a twist piston. The TWSBI Vac700R fills with one stroke. Pull the plunger up, push it down and the clear barrel is full of ink. It is a big, clear, demonstrator style pen that shows off both the ink and the mechanism, and it adds a clever valve that keeps that ink where it belongs when you travel. Here is what it does and who it is for.

## What it is

The [Vac700R](https://www.twsbi.com/products/twsbi-vac700-fountain-pen?ref=unknowndivide.com) is a vacuum filler fountain pen from [TWSBI](https://www.twsbi.com/?ref=unknowndivide.com). The company sums up the filling process in a single line: simply pull up, push down and your ink is filled, ready to go. The pen also has an ink shut off valve, which TWSBI says is designed for easy carry and no spill mess.

Key details, according to TWSBI:

- **Filling system:** vacuum filler
- **Valve:** ink shut off valve for carrying without spills
- **Ink flow:** TWSBI says the pen delivers even more consistent ink flow when the valve is opened
- **Nib sizes:** EF, F, M, B, Stub 1.1 and Stub 1.5
- **Ink:** not included

## How vacuum filling works

TWSBI's whole explanation of filling fits in a sentence: pull up, push down and your ink is filled. With the nib in a bottle of ink, that one stroke does the job. Compared with a twist piston pen, like the [TWSBI ECO](https://www.unknowndivide.com/twsbi-eco-piston-fountain-pen/), there is no turning: the fill happens in a single motion.

Our guide to [fountain pen filling systems](https://www.unknowndivide.com/fountain-pen-filling-systems-explained/) compares vacuum filling with cartridges, converters and pistons, so you can see where it fits.

## The shut off valve

The valve is what makes the Vac700R practical for everyday carry. TWSBI designed it so you can close off the ink for easy carry with no spill mess. When the valve is opened, ink flows to the nib, and TWSBI says the R version offers even more consistent ink flow when it is open. Close it again before the pen goes in a bag, and TWSBI says you avoid spill mess.

## Choosing a nib

The Vac700R comes in six nib options, and TWSBI offers its own quick guide to choosing:

- **EF:** if you write small
- **F:** the most popular choice for the normal writer
- **M:** if you lean toward a bigger script
- **B:** for signatures, headers and shading
- **Stub 1.1 and Stub 1.5:** italic in writing style, for special cards and invitations

If you change your mind later, TWSBI sells a [spare nib set for the Vac700R](https://www.twsbi.com/products/twsbi-vac700r-nib-set?ref=unknowndivide.com) and describes the swap as quick and easy. Note that TWSBI says this nib set only fits the R version, not the earlier Vac700.

## The matching bottle

TWSBI also makes the [Vac20A ink bottle](https://www.twsbi.com/products/twsbi-vac20-ink-bottle?ref=unknowndivide.com), a 20 ml travel size bottle with interchangeable caps. TWSBI says the middle cap is made for its Vac700 pens, while the lower cap works with all fountain pens and the upper cap fits the Vac Mini. It comes in blue, black, green, red and orange. If you plan to carry ink with you, it is a natural companion to the Vac700R.

## Why it is cool

The Vac700R is a pen that likes to be watched. The clear barrel shows the ink color and level at a glance, and the one stroke fill is satisfying in a way cartridges never are. The valve turns a desk pen into one you can actually carry. For anyone who enjoys the ritual of fountain pens, it is a centerpiece.

## Who should buy it

Buy the Vac700R if you write a lot, love bottled inks and want a pen that fills in one stroke and travels without spills. It is a good step up from a starter pen like the Platinum Preppy, and a different experience from a piston filler like the [TWSBI Diamond 580ALR](https://www.unknowndivide.com/twsbi-diamond-580alr-fountain-pen/).

Skip it if you want the simplest possible setup or a small pocket pen. A cartridge pen is easier for beginners, and our roundup of the [best fountain pens](https://www.unknowndivide.com/best-fountain-pens/) has more options. Remember that ink is not included, so order a bottle with the pen.

## Where to buy

TWSBI sells the Vac700R directly in several finishes, and pen shops carry it widely.
