## One piece, one room, a lot of air

The new record runs a little under 38 minutes as one unbroken track. Instead of the decaying tape loops that made his name, Basinski builds it from piano phrases that hang in space while faint electronic shading moves underneath. The official notes point to Morton Feldman as the guiding spirit, and that fits: the piece is patient, sparse and more interested in how a chord fades than in where it goes next.

The title comes from past-life regression hypnotherapy, where a concept called Life Between Lives describes an exchange between two souls that helps one forgive a being who hurt it in a past life. That exchange is known as passing the cup of sorrows. Basinski came across testimonials about the practice, found them deeply moving, and sat down at his piano to turn that idea of old trauma becoming present day release into sound. You do not need to buy into any of it to feel what the music does. It plays like a slow handoff of grief, set down gently enough that it ends up feeling like relief.

## Why a new Basinski album is a big deal

Basinski, born in 1958 and classically trained, spent decades working with tape loops and found sound before the world caught up. His four disc masterwork *The Disintegration Loops* earned international acclaim, Temporary Residence reissued it as a deluxe LP box set in 2012, and orchestral transcriptions of it by Maxim Moston have been performed at venues including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Since then the label has been his home for records like *Lamentations* in 2020 and *On Reflection*, his 2022 collaboration with Janek Schaefer.

That is why six years of silence on the solo front made this one so anticipated. *Passing the Cup of Sorrows* is a clear turn toward the piano, but the core of his work is intact. Repetition, decay and memory still sit at the center, just carried by hands on keys instead of magnetic tape giving out.

## Formats and where to hear it live

The album is available as a high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz download, on CD, and on vinyl in a New Gamboge color edition or standard black. All of it is through Bandcamp and the Temporary Residence store.

Basinski is also taking the music into spaces built for it. Announced dates include the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia on November 7, BERHTA in Washington DC on November 8, a three-night run at Public Records in New York from November 9 to 11, the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit on November 13 and the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in Chicago on November 14\. Next spring brings Grace Cathedral in San Francisco on May 13 and the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on May 15\. Churches and chapels are a natural fit for a piano piece this spacious.

## Our call

This one is Surfacing. A new solo Basinski album is an event for anyone who lives in ambient music, and the piano focus makes it an easy entry point for people who never sat through a full Disintegration Loop. Put it on with headphones, late, and let the full 38 minutes run.
