Some boots chase trends. The Wolverine 1000 Mile does the opposite: it is a pattern from 1914 that the company still builds by hand, and it looks as right with selvedge denim today as it did on the factory floor more than a century ago. If you have been looking for one good pair of leather boots that you can wear for years and have resoled when the bottoms give out, this is one of the most honest options around.

## Who makes it

[Wolverine](https://www.wolverine.com/US/en/heritage?ref=unknowndivide.com) was established in Michigan in 1883 and calls itself the maker of America's original work boot. The company is still best known for job site footwear, from waterproof six inch work boots to safety toe styles, but its heritage line is where the brand's history lives. Wolverine says it honors that legacy with the 1000 Mile Collection, described as timeless styles handcrafted in America from archival patterns.

## What the 1000 Mile Plain-Toe Original actually is

The boot at the center of the line is the [1000 Mile Plain-Toe Original Boot](https://www.wolverine.com/US/en/1000-mile-plain-toe-original-boot/17967M.html?ref=unknowndivide.com). It used to be called simply the 1000 Mile Original Boot, and Wolverine says the pattern was recreated from the first 1000 Mile boot the company introduced in 1914\. It comes in brown and black.

What makes it worth the attention is how it is put together. According to Wolverine, the boot is:

- Handcrafted in the United States.
- Made with an unlined upper of premium leather from the Horween Leather Company in Chicago, Illinois.
- Finished with a classic leather outsole and a Vibram heel from Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
- Laced with flat waxed cotton laces from Landrum, South Carolina.
- Built with Goodyear welt construction, which Wolverine says is durable and flexible and lets the boot be resoled for years of wear.

That last point is the important one. Because the boot can be resoled, a worn out sole does not have to mean the end of the pair. It is a boot built to be repaired rather than replaced.

## Why it is cool

The appeal of the 1000 Mile is how little it tries. It is a slim, plain lace up boot on a leather sole rather than a chunky lug, which is why it works with everything from raw jeans to wool trousers.

The unlined Horween leather is the other half of the story. With no lining, the leather is the whole boot, and it takes on creases and character from the way you wear it. Wolverine itself pitches its Horween leather as something that will look better with each passing mile. A new pair looks smart. A pair that has been worn for five years looks like it belongs to you.

## The rest of the 1000 Mile family

If the Plain-Toe Original is not quite the look you want, the 1000 Mile Icon line offers a few close relatives built the same way in the United States:

- The [1000 Mile Cap-Toe Classic Boot](https://www.wolverine.com/US/en/1000-mile-cap-toe-classic-boot/45049M.html?ref=unknowndivide.com) adds a double needle stitched cap toe and uses full grain Chromexcel leather from Horween, which Wolverine describes as deep and rich in color with a light pull-up that gains character with wear. Its leather outsole adds a Vibram rubber forepart as well as a Vibram heel.
- The Rough Out version of the Plain-Toe Original uses leather from Charles F. Stead, which Wolverine says has a rugged, broken-in character and is saturated with a blend of waxes.
- The 1000 Mile Plain-Toe Rugged Boot swaps the slim sole for a lug outsole for more grip.

Wolverine also makes the newer [1000 Mile Legacy Collection](https://www.wolverine.com/US/en/1000-mile-legacy-pavedway-boot/60793M.html?ref=unknowndivide.com), which the company says honors the same heritage with versatile boots for today. These are a more casual and more accessible way into the line. The Legacy Pavedway Boot was named after the first highway paved across the state of Michigan, a construction feat of the 1910s. It pairs a full grain leather upper with a cushioned polyurethane wedge outsole, a removable footbed and a Goodyear welt, so it can also be resoled. The Legacy Cort is a waterproof chukka with a padded collar and a rubber lug outsole, built with lighter cement construction.

## Who should buy it

The Plain-Toe Original is for someone who wants one pair of boots to wear almost every day and keep for a long time. It suits people who like clean, classic menswear, and who will actually take their boots to a cobbler when the sole wears down. If you want something you can wear in the rain without thinking about it, or something softer straight out of the box, the Legacy Cort or Pavedway is the easier pick.
