A design icon is not just something famous. It is an object that solved a problem so well that nobody has needed to solve it again. The Eames Lounge Chair still looks right seventy years later. Noguchi's paper Akari lamps are still folded by hand in Gifu. Dieter Rams wrote ten principles for good design, and the radios and clocks he made for Braun still follow every one of them.
This hub collects our writing about those objects and the people and movements behind them. We start with the explainers, where we cover a single chair, lamp or shelving system in depth: where it came from, who made it, why it endured and what to look for if you want one. Then we step back to the movements that shaped them, from the Bauhaus and its belief that good design should be for everyone, to the Scandinavian makers who brought that idea into ordinary homes, to the Memphis group who broke all the rules on purpose.
Lighting gets its own section, because few objects change a room as much as a well designed lamp. After that come the reissues and revivals, where classic pieces return from the archive, followed by the exhibitions, books and gift guides that help you go deeper. Every relevant post we have published is linked below, each with a short note on what you will learn.
We keep this page updated as new posts go live. If you are new to design history, start with the Rams principles and the Bauhaus explainer, because almost everything else on this page answers to one of them. If you are shopping, go straight to the furniture, lighting and everyday objects sections.
