Sneakers and heritage style without the resale hype: boots built to be resoled, raw denim, workwear and the collaborations worth understanding.

Sneaker and style coverage mostly runs on the drop calendar. A release is announced, the resale price is predicted, and a week later everyone has moved on. We find the stories behind the shoes more interesting than the countdown, and the things people keep wearing more useful than the things they flip.

That is why this hub puts heritage first. A boot that can be resoled, a pair of raw denim jeans you break in yourself, and a Dr. Martens 1460 that has outlived every subculture that ever claimed it all say more about how clothes should be made than most limited editions do. Start with the boots and denim guides if you are buying for yourself, and with the gift guide if you are buying for someone else.

The collaborations get covered too, when there is something worth saying. Fugazi's $5 Vans were a plan rather than a fluke. Arc'teryx started its circular design program with its hardest garment. The Crocs ROY makes more sense once you know who designed it. Every story we have published on footwear, denim, workwear and the brands around them is linked below, each with a line on why it earned its place.

Start here

  • The Best Heritage Boots: six boots built to be resoled, not replaced, from Red Wing's miner's boot to Danner's classic backpacking boot.
  • Raw Denim: A Beginner's Guide: what raw, selvedge and sanforized actually mean, and six jeans from the Wrangler 13MWZ to A.P.C. and Momotaro.

Deep dives: footwear

  • Dr. Martens: The 1460: a homemade air-cushioned sole, production in England from April 1, 1960, and a boot that outlived every subculture.
  • Crocs ROY: a sculptural foam slip-on whose designer, Steven Smith, turns a strange Croc into the last chapter of a long argument.
  • Nike ACG Zegama Hike: marathon-racer ZoomX foam in a mid-cut hiking boot, the latest step in a long streak of quiet innovation.
  • Fugazi's $5 Vans: after Vans killed the collab, the shoes sold for $5 cash and were blurred out online, exactly as planned.
